Version 2.06 of Android Auto listens for OK Google

You know what’d be a great feature for a smart head unit of a car? Voice controls. You know why Android Auto didn’t include the “OK Google” trigger phrase to launch a command until now? We don’t either, but that’s apparently what Reddit is hot about today.

The November 29 release of the app does not list the new ability in its changelog, but apparently, the feature works. Whether you’re using the app on your phone or on said head unit, you should now be able to ask Google to change up your jams without pressing the microphone button.

The odd irony is that for all this time, you could still trigger “OK Google” from outside the Android Auto app.

White House Historical Association releases 1600, an AR touring app

If you would like to tour around the building where the executive branch of the US government does its most important work, there’s a lot of hassle involved in getting down to Washington, D.C., and making the proper guiding arrangements.

But if you have an iOS or Android device and a $1 bill, you’ll be able to get a new take on how the White House came to be and what purpose it serves with the new “1600” app.

The app is a collaboration with the White House Historical Association, the White House and Nexus Studios out of the UK. It features an animated, augmented reality sequence where the White House suddenly rises out of George Washington’s face — he was the only president not to have lived there, though he did order the facilities built during his presidency. The narration behind the story goes on about how the White House is “the People’s House.”

The app is free to download, though you do need the $1 bill to trigger the experience.

The Pixel’s purple camera crash problem may be with geolocation

A purple screen and distorted memories are what many Google Pixel users in Europe have been dealing with for more than a month now.

An issue stemmed in the Google Pixel User Community by Mike Fox on October 27 showed what appeared to be a major problem with the Pixel taking pictures with the Google Camera app. Snapped results would often end up with the frame “off-sync,” where a portion of the picture is shifted to the opposite side of where it should be. Bright magenta bars tint portions of the image as well.

All of this would frequently end up freezing the phone upon review.

After testing with third-party apps, complete data wipes, secondary units and further reports — many of them from the UK and Germany using the international Pixel SKU, though there was an isolated case with a US-bought Pixel XL on Verizon being used in Italy — along the thread were not able to pin down the problem for some time.

Then it was suggested that the problem could be related to how data reception is for any particular area. The risk is especially heightened in poorer 2G spots. Pictures taken on Airplane Mode did not cause the issue. At this point, we’re inclined to guess that automatic cloud backup may be a factor in causing the bug to show up though from further posts, it seems that geolocation tagging may be a bigger culprit.

The Pixel’s camera has also been affected by a “halo effect” caused by the glass. Google promised that a software update would remedy the issue. A software update that was sent to Canadian Pixel units may have the fix on this case, but it has not been sent to other regions that we know of.

MobileSyrup has contacted Google for a response to this issue.

Circular Apple Watch patent applications look sweet but unlikely to materialize

Tech wars are often fought with patents in various courts of law rather than what consumers may regard as actual, valuable and practical innovation, but USPTO applications can also occasionally offer precious glimpses into products and features developed behind the scenes by giants such as Apple.

Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to separate an unlikely concept from a commercial sure thing. Case in point, we’re not at all surprised to see Cupertino dabble with the idea of a circular wearable gadget as recently as January 2016.

The question is how much, if anything, of the two just-published curved display electronic device “inventions” could become reality in the near future? Are these advanced, almost fully authorized prototypes, like that Home Button-less iPhone 8, or closer to the wishful thinking of a reliable wrist or ankle ECG monitor?

If you consider market trends, and the way Samsung or LG dumped rectangular smartwatches without looking back after only a couple of failed experiments, it’s certainly possible the Apple Watch will get a major redesign too.

Then again, admitting aesthetic defeat so quickly doesn’t really sound like Apple’s M.O. The best you can probably hope for is shape choice, and even that’s a long shot, thinking about yields, volumes and so on. Still, it’s nice to know a round-faced Apple Watch is or at least was in the not so distant past contemplated.

one-plus-3t-review-780

OnePlus 3T touch latency is a hot topic, but is it being blown out of proportion (partly by us)? If it is an issue, OnePlus claims they’ll fix it after they release Nougat updates. That Nougat update is currently an open BETA for folks who want to give it a spin. Will these fixes and updates arrive in a timely fashion? Previous issues like RAM management and display accuracy point to fast fixes.

Republic Wireless is now its own separate company, will offer big discounts on phones and plans soon

Bandwidth’s WiFi-first baby is all grown up and ready to take on America’s “big four” mobile carriers by itself, moving on from under the former parent company’s wing just six short months after graduating to T-Mobile support in addition to an older Sprint partnership.

Granted, Republic’s independence quest was still completed with a massive $30 million cash infusion from North Carolina-based communications technology business Bandwidth.com. But this is merely supposed to mark the beginning of an “even more exciting next chapter ahead” in the successful history of the now autonomous MVNO pioneer.

Don’t worry, Republic Wireless plans no changes to any of its “day-to-day operations or contracts.” That crazy cheap cellular service isn’t getting price hikes, limitations or monthly data downgrades. Quite the contrary, as purchasing the Moto Z Play between December 7 and 12 will net you both a cool $100 discount on the phone’s regular $449 charge, and half a year of no cost contract-free unlimited talk and text, plus 1GB cell data a month.

Yes, you read that right. The no-contract Moto Z Play shall set you back just $349 next week from Republic Wireless, including six complimentary months of service, typically worth a grand total of $120. Then, between December 13 and 19, you can get the as-yet unreleased Huawei Ascend 5W for $129 ($50 off list), with the same “unheard of” no cost WiFi-first service offer.

Microsoft’s 3D strategy suggests a lot about it’s mobile strategy

A few weeks back, Microsoft had an event in which they unveiled some really neat things. Now, I’m not here to talk about The Surface Book, though it is nice, nor the Surface Studio, though I admittedly want one pretty hard. Rather, I want to talk about how Microsoft likely tipped its hand for the future. It looks very highly likely that Windows 10 mobile isn’t long for this world, at least in its current form. Allow me to explain.

Microsoft started off by showing off its new upcoming update to Windows 10. Windows 10 Creators Update will feature a wide range of creator’s tools, including the pronounced use to 3D modeling in Paint among other programs. You remember Windows Paint right? I remember vividly coloring in pixel by pixel in Windows Paint long before I had any concept of Paint Shop Pro, or anything Adobe’s ever made. But one announcement Microsoft made seemingly telegraphed its intentions going forward.

microsoft-paint-3d-doodleNot just Windows

During the demo of 3D fun that we were shown, our Creator presenter showed off 3D scanning capability on an app installed on an HP Elite X3,  because someone had to buy one I guess. But the next item dropped was the kicker. The app that was scanning 3D objects with the greatest of ease was going to roll out to all mobile phones in the future including Android and iPhone, presumably..

Just think about that for a second. Microsoft has this really great tech that pairs off well with its operating system, and it’s releasing it to the masses without batting an eyelash. Of course, we don’t know the full details just yet – whether it’ll be Windows 10 Mobile first, everyone else second, etc. But the fact that Microsoft is getting out in front of everyone and sharing this tech on competing platforms tells me one of two things is happening.

On the bright side

The more optimistic view of this is that Microsoft realizes that other platforms are already well on their way to doing this. Sometimes friend/sometimes competitor Lenovo rolled out very similar tech with Project Tango (cross) and the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. It’s possible and likely that Microsoft simply wants to get ahead of the game in this respect. 3D and augmented reality are coming very quickly over the horizon and the first companies in this industry will likely benefit the most. It’s possible Microsoft simply wants to get in everyone’s heads about this stuff before we start thinking about it in earnest.

Let’s face it, 3D models with Buffy and Missy on the beach are cute, but there’s no real practical application for them…yet. This industry has a long way to go to establishing itself and Microsoft clearly wants to be one of the first boots on the ground. Industries aren’t always defined by who is best, but often by who is first. Microsoft can make up a lot of ground in the mobile and computing industry in general if it is one of the early pioneers of this future.

microsoft-paint-3d-minecraftBe everywhere, not nowhere

Of course, it likely also means that Microsoft wants to be the first in this industry on all platforms because it recognizes that its own platform won’t gain the traction it needs to be a leader. If this tech were cool enough, and it looks like it might be, it could potentially help pull a platform up by a lot. If Microsoft were to stay exclusive to Windows 10 Mobile and release this 3D Centric Creator Update, it might have some chance of reviving the platform. Not much of a chance, but a chance. Rather, Microsoft is taking the safer bet by going all in on the successful platforms, which means it has little faith in its own. This is a bit sobering and sad, but I’m not sure I see another way to interpret these events.

That being said, if Microsoft can help shape this future of ours, there is still every reason to continue to be somewhat active in the mobile space and stay fresh in the minds of those who are paying attention to technology. Because when the time comes to ramp up Windows (whatever number they’re on) Mobile in the future, it will already have some column inches waiting for it. Windows 10 Mobile may not be dead, but it’s clearly less important to Microsoft than ever before. There is some reason to hope for the future – the far future – but for right now, Microsoft is playing things safe, as it probably should.
