19 essential iPhone 8 tips and tricks

It’s a shame the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus didn’t come with all new designs, because while they look like a slightly different iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus there are some massive improvements under the hood: ridiculously fast processors, even better cameras and some brilliant new features.

And here we present 19 ways to make your iPhone 8 / 8 Plus experience even better through a selection of different tips, tricks and handy alternatives to the things you do every day with your handset - use these to become a power user of your new Apple phone.

1. Squeeze the keyboard

The iPhone 8 is big, and the 8 Plus bigger still. If you’re struggling to type one-handed, press and hold the emoji button on the keyboard and you’ll see three keyboard icons: a left-hand side keyboard, the current standard keyboard and a right-hand side keyboard. Choose either left or right to squish the keyboard to that side for easier typing.

2. Customize Control Center

The redesigned Control Center is much handier than before, and you can make it handier still by changing its contents in Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. You’ll find some interesting options in there, such as the option to add screen recording or control your Apple TV.

3. Drag and drop

iPhones haven’t yet got the power to drag and drop between apps, but you can now drag and drop inside Apple’s apps – so you can drag an attachment in Mail into a new message, drag text from one Note to another and so on. In Notes, for example, you work in landscape mode and drag an image or text selection out and over the note you want to drop it into; after a second that note opens and you can move your block of text or image to its desired location. In the Files app you can drag items over folders to move them.

4. Scan QR codes

Apple is very, very late to the QR code party, but you can now scan QR codes from within the Camera app. It’ll automatically recognize that it’s looking at a QR code and will then enable you to open the link in Safari, connect to the Wi-Fi network or do anything else the code is designed to do.

5. Make messages messier, or just mute them

There are new effects in Messages: to see them, hold down the Send icon and tap Screen. You can mute conversations in Messages now too: swipe left on a conversation and tap Hide Alerts.

6. Loop your Live Photos

Live Photos are a lot of fun, and they’re even more fun on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus: swipe the photo up to see the effects options, which enable you to loop or bounce your Live Photo, or apply a long-exposure effect.

7. Record at any resolution

The camera in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus shoots 4K at 30 frames per second by default, but you can adjust that in Settings > Camera > Record Video to boost the speed to 60fps, drop it to 24fps or use a lower resolution such as 1080p or 720p HD. Naturally, the higher the resolution and frame rate the more space you’ll need to store your video.

8. Charge without cables

You've probably seen that both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus support the Qi charging standard, so they’ll work with any Qi-compatible pad, including the pads and charging-enabled furniture IKEA sells.

You can also buy an Apple-approved charging pad from Mophie or Belkin for $59.95 / £54.95 / AU$99.95, with Apple’s own AirPower pad coming later this year. It’s not as fast as charging with a cable, but it’s a lot more convenient and Apple reckons it's not far off in terms of speed.

9. Change lighting in Portrait mode

This one’s Plus-only, and it’s one of the headline features of the phone. Portrait mode has new lighting options that enable you to choose from different studio lighting and stage lighting effects, and the results are instant – there’s some serious processing going on to make the magic happen so quickly, and the original data is saved so you can change your mind later.

10. Discover the power of Slow Sync

Photo pros will know about slow sync flash already, because it’s something many cameras can do – it’s a way of getting more balanced shots when using flash in low light by keeping the shutter open for longer.

In a normal flash photo the subject is brightly lit and the background dark, but with slow sync it’s much closer to what you see with your eyes. You don’t need to do anything to enable this option – it’s just part of the camera.

11. Get into AR

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus cameras have been designed for augmented reality (AR) apps thanks to the high power of the A11 Bionic chip. Yes, other phones in the range can do the same, but you'll get the best experience on the latest handsets.

It’s a lot of fun, and an exciting glimpse of the future, whether you're looking at IKEA furniture overlaid on your living room or Thomas & Friends Minis on the coffee table.

12. Change the photo format

iOS 11 introduced a new, much more efficient file format for photos called HEIF, and it's the default format. However, if you want to store photos in the less efficient but more widely supported JPEG format, you can change the default in Settings > Camera > Formats.

You can do the same with video, changing from HEVC to H.264 as the default. Don’t worry about doing this if you just want to share the odd photo – when you share, iOS automatically converts from the high-efficiency format to JPEG or H.264.

13. Share your storage

This is a big one for families: you can now share your iCloud space with family members – so, for example, we’ve got a 2TB plan that we share with the kids.

You can enable this in Settings > iCloud > Manage Storage. Don’t worry, your secret iCloud files aren’t shared, just your storage space.

14. Don’t crash the car

Using your phone while driving is, of course, stupid and dangerous, but if you’re not sure that you can avoid temptation then enable Do Not Disturb While Driving in Settings > Do Not Disturb.

The name tells you what it does, but not how clever it is: your iPhone can tell how fast you’re moving or whether you’re connected to an in-car Bluetooth system, and turn the feature on automatically.

It won’t block phone calls, and people can still get hold of you in an emergency. However, be warned: it'll also do the same on a train, which can be annoying on the commute to work and you're sat wondering why nobody loves you.

15. Organize your files

The new Files app is now on iPhone, and it’s a handy way of accessing not just iCloud, which is useful in its own right, but third-party services such as Dropbox and Google Drive too.

However, most file transfers will still be handled by the inbuilt 'Share' icon in the relevant apps, rather than using Files, but if you want to share things from Pages or similar, this is the place to come.

16. Toggle True Tone

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus get a smart feature that was previously only for iPads: True Tone display, which adjusts the screen color temperature and brightness based on the ambient lighting conditions.

In the unlikely event that you don’t want the colors to be more realistic on the screen, you can toggle it in Settings > Display and Brightness or by pushing hard on the brightness slider in Control Center, through 3D Touch.

17. Turn off Auto Brightness

If you prefer to adjust the display's brightness yourself rather than leaving it to your iPhone's auto setting, you’ll want to know the new location of Auto Brightness – it’s been moved out of Settings > Display & Brightness and now lives in Settings > Accessibility > Display Accommodations.

18. Prepare for emergencies

The new Emergency SOS feature, which you can enable in Settings > Emergency SOS, disables Touch ID when activated and can automatically call an emergency number or notify named contacts that you need assistance.

To use it, press the power button five times.

19. Get a free guide

Apple has published a huuuuuuuuuuuge iPhone user guide for iBooks. It’s free, and you can get it here.

This article is brought to you in association with Vodafone.

You can save $100 on an HTC U11 next week

While the Google Pixel 2 is set to be announced on October 4, HTC is celebrating its other creations with a customer appreciation week starting Monday, October 2 and lasting until Sunday, October 8.

These are the deals you’ve been waiting for if you’ve been itching to get your hands on three of the manufacturer’s big 2017 releases:

  • HTC U11 ($100 off at $549, plus free HTC gift pack)

This phone packs in the innovative and squeeze-friendly Edge Sense tech, the amazing BoomSound USB-C earbuds, super-fast Snapdragon 835 and a stellar camera.

A premium mid-range device inspired by the LG V20’s dual-display combo. Its biggest flaw was its high price tag, so now that’s it lower, this is one that’s worth looking at.

This Sprint exclusive looks startlingly like the Google Pixel and is quite durable if you’re someone who’s likely to put your smartphones through a world of hurt. It’s not the best value out there, but if you’re strapped for options on Sprint’s network, you could do far worse.

  • Accessories (50% off w/ purchase)

If you purchase a smartphone during the week-long sale, HTC offering any and all accessories for that device at a steep discount. Heck, even if you don’t spend big money, you can likely pick up a case of your choosing for just $10.

You don’t commonly see a manufacturer slash prices, so this is nice to see. We also enjoy how self-aware HTC is by holding the event until October 8, also written as 10/08, the time stamped onto each and every HTC smartphone in promotions.

On top of the deals, HTC is hosting giveaways during the Green is Good week-long event. If you want to be eligible to receive a free HTC U11, HTC U Ultra, HTC Vive and more for free, just sign up through this link.

The Sprint-exclusive LG V30 Plus is an incredibly good deal

It was widely believed that the plus-sized LG V30 Plus would make an appearance at IFA 2017, but alas, that didn't happen.

Interestingly enough, that model has popped up today, but as a Sprint exclusive in the United States. The language used in the carrier’s press release states that it will be the sole provider of the phone “at launch”, which like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, means it will likely make its way to more carriers (and more regions) eventually.

Carrier exclusivity deals aside, this is a heck of a bargain for what is building up to be one of 2017's best flagships. Sprint is taking full advantage of the spotlight by offering a buy-one-get-one for the V30 Plus, with both phones costing just $38 per month combined. That works out to roughly $900 for two phones, which is a staggeringly good deal considering that other carriers, like T-Mobile, are offering a single V30 (non-Plus) for $30 per month, or about $800 total after a two-year contract.

Not just that, Sprint is also offering a free Google Daydream View headset and a content starter pack along with purchase. The deal just gets better and better.

Great deal, confusing phone

Digging into what makes the V30 Plus unique, it isn’t a “plus” in the same sense as, say, the iPhone 8 Plus. It’s actually no bigger than the standard LG V30, which also features a six-inch AMOLED display.

What is different is the internal storage, which is doubled to 128GB, as well as the fact that LG is tossing in a set of its LG Quad Play wired headphones that are supposedly suited to take advantage of the Quad DAC built into the phone.

As the release of the LG V30 has crept closer with few details shared until recently, the announcement of an entirely separate model is somewhat confusing. This is compounded further by the fact that the Plus is not only the exact same size as the core V30, but also that the doubled storage doesn’t carry much weight as a selling point since both versions have a microSD slot.

I suppose the Plus-specific earbuds are a solid toss-in, assuming these are as good as the Bang & Olufsen earbuds that LG included with last year’s LG V20. But what does this mean for what’s inside of the standard V30’s box? We haven't received a final unit yet, so we're unsure of what buyers are in for when they buy in.

The LG V30 Plus comes after Sprint nabbed exclusive rights to sell the Essential Phone in its stores. Given that Sprint is the underdog of US wireless carriers, it’s definitely an impressive feat to nab not one, but two big hardware exclusives.

Why an armored-up Samsung Galaxy S8 Active may be a phone everyone can buy

Update: The S8 Active is reportedly heading to T-Mobile, according to VentureBeat. The phone's limited run of exclusivity on AT&T is said to be coming to an end, which we were early to pick up on due to Samsung's dodgy marketing speak at launch.

We are still unsure as to whether this phone will make it to other wireless carriers, such as Verizon and Sprint. But breaking the multi-year mold of sticking with AT&T is certainly a good first step.

Original article follows below.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active in on sale today exclusively through AT&T, but you may be able to get it on other carriers for the first time in the Active's history.

Almost hidden in the official announcement are the two important words you may have glossed over: "limited time," as in "for a limited time, the latest Galaxy S8 Active device will be exclusively available from AT&T."

We've never seen this before and it means that Samsung Galaxy S8 Active may actually come to more US carriers like Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.

In fact, this could be the first Samsung Galaxy Active phone to launch worldwide in several years. For some reason, Samsung refused to launch an Active outside of the US after the S4 Active.

Galaxy S8 Active will be a fun one to test

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is going to be one of our favorite phones to review in 2017 due to all of the extreme testing we will put it under.

It's a water-, shock- and dust-resistant, and the screen is shatter-resistant. Yet it has all of the same high-end guts as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, which are only water and dust-resistant.

We've positively reviewed the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active and Galaxy S6 Active, but did rightfully complain that it's only available on AT&T, depriving so many people of one of the best armored-up Android phones.

The words "limited time" could change everything, and hopefully that is good news for those on Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile as well as UK and Australian carriers.

Where to buy Samsung Galaxy S8 Active

For now, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is available through AT&T, with no time frame on its possible expansion.

It costs as much as the Galaxy S8 Plus, even with its 5.8-inch display that mirrors the standard Galaxy S8 size. The armored-up specs add to the price.

However, the S8 Active price is $699 through Samsung right now, instead of the $849 price that AT&T is charging.

And don't be fooled. While AT&T sells it for $28.34 a month, that's over 30 months. Samsung is selling for for $29.17 a month for just 24 months, a savings of $145.86.

Waiting for Pixel 2 XL? Sketchy leaked images point to ‘Ultra pixel’ phone

We’re just days away from the October 4 reveal of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, yet hints of a completely new phone, dubbed the ‘Ultra pixel’ have emerged.

YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss received images and video from an anonymous, unverified source who claimed to have seen Google’s upcoming phones. The shots and footage show what appears to be presentation slides or marketing material on a computer screen, referring to a phone called the ‘Ultra pixel’.

This isn’t a name we’ve come across before in relation to the Pixel 2, so we’re skeptical. And even if the images are authentic the name could be referring to the camera, given that Google is strongly rumored to be working with HTC on the phones, and HTC makes ‘UltraPixel’ cameras.

The actual images of the phone look somewhat like the leaked shots of the Pixel 2 XL we’ve seen, complete with minimal bezels around the screen, so there’s not much new there, and not much to suggest this is anything other than a Pixel 2 XL. But there are some interesting hints at ways you might interact with the phone.

One of the slides says “the future of Android is fluid”, which could mean a focus on gesture controls rather than buttons. That could make sense if Google wants to maximize the screen space, but it’s not something we’ve heard before, which as with other things in this leak we’d think we would have by now.

Could Google beat Apple to under-screen scanners?

There’s also a mention of a new type of fingerprint scanner, which the YouTuber reckons might mean an under-display one, which the likes of Apple and Samsung have supposedly been working on and so far failed to deliver.

If true that could be a big win for the Pixel 2, but it’s more likely referring to an improved version of the standard fingerprint scanner, especially as leaked shots of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL show a scanner on the back.

In short, while there are multiple ways to interpret this information the most likely is that this is simply the Pixel 2 XL, and with nothing much new shown, other than hints of gesture controls.

It’s also very likely that this is fake though. Indeed, reputable leaker Evan Blass has said as much, quoting “someone who knows.” So we really wouldn’t read much into it. Either way, we’ll know the truth soon.

iPhone X might not be widely available until March

The iPhone X is the most hotly anticipated smartphone of the year, but you might have to wait until next year to actually get your hands on one.

That’s according to several analysts speaking to USA Today. The most optimistic of them is Gene Munster, a tech investor and analyst with Loup Ventures, but even he reckons the iPhone X won’t be in stock until January at the earliest.

Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies said it will be “a good three-four months until the X is in wide supply,” and Jan Dawson, an analyst with Jackdaw Research, claims you’ll be able to find the iPhone X in stores “sometime in the first quarter” – a period which runs until the end of March.

While these are just guesses – albeit educated ones – there are plenty of reasons to think the iPhone X might be in very, very short supply.

Delays and demand

For one thing, we’ve heard numerous reports about production problems and delays, thanks primarily to the new OLED screen and Face ID scanner, and this is clearly a product that’s taking Apple more work than usual, given that it’s not even officially landing until November 3.

When the iPhone X does arrive, not only might it be in smaller numbers than usual, thanks to these problems, but also it’s likely to be in higher demand.

Despite the high price tag it’s clear that the bulk of the interest seems to be on the iPhone X rather than the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, and it’s no wonder, given how much of an upgrade the X is, at least on paper.

In fact, analysts expect the iPhone X to sell out within an hour or two of pre-orders opening on October 27, followed by long lines in stores and Apple playing catch-up over the following few months.

So, while no-one knows for sure how the iPhone X launch will play out, or how many handsets Apple will have managed to build, it seems that if you want one you should get your order in the second it’s possible to, otherwise you might be waiting a long time.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus on Flipkart: Assured buyback, cashbacks and exchange offers

Apple had launched the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in India recently and the devices are set to go on sale starting from tomorrow, September 29 from 12AM. Both the new iPhones went up for pre-order on September 22.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are priced starting at Rs. 64,000 and Rs. 73,000 respectively. Reliance Jio had earlier announced various discounts and cashback on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, promising up to 70% cashback on the basic value of the phones. Now, Flipkart has come up with some attractive exchange and buyback offers on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus – best exchange offers

Under the exchange offer on Flipkart, you will get the best discounts if you exchange devices such as the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 6S, Moto Z and OnePlus 3T. If you exchange your iPhone 7 Plus, you can get the iPhone 8 64GB for as low as Rs. 3,000 after considering the exchange value, cashback, and guaranteed buyback value.

Citi Credit card and World Debit card offers on iPhone 8, 8 Plus

Customers who pay using Citi credit card and World debit card will get a cashback of Rs. 10,000 on buying the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus. However, to avail the Rs. 10,000 cashback, you will have to buy the new iPhones before 17:59 hours, 29th September. The cashback of Rs. 10,000 will be credited to your account by 30th December, 2017.

Buyback Guarantee up to Rs. 38,000

Coming to the Buyback Guarantee value, you can buy it for Rs. 99 and you will get an assured exchange value of up to Rs. 33,000 on the iPhone 8 and Rs. 38,000 on the iPhone 8 Plus.

Assuming you are exchanging an iPhone 7 Plus for the iPhone 8 64GB, using a Citi credit or World debit card, and return the iPhone 8 within 6-8 months, you can essentially use the iPhone 8 for free. This is, of course, subject to any additional buyback conditions applicable from Flipkart’s end.

If you upgrade to new smartphones often, it may be worth considering subscribing for Flipkart’s Buyback Guarantee. At worst, you lose only Rs. 99 at the end of the day even if you don’t use the offer.

Exchange offers on iPhones

If you exchange your existing Apple device such as the iPhone 7 Plus, you will get a discount of Rs. 23,000. In addition to that, you can get an additional cashback of Rs. 10,000 if you pay using the Citi credit card and World debit cards.

As for the Buyback Guarantee on the iPhone 8, you will get an assured value of Rs. 33,000 if you exchange it within 6 – 8 months of buying the device. Considering all these offers, the effective price of the iPhone 8 is Rs. -2,000, essentially making the iPhone 8 free subject to application of all these offers.

Similarly, you can get a discount of Rs. 17,000 and Rs. 11,000 on exchanging your iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S respectively. The Citi Credit card and Buyback Guarantee offers remain unchanged irrespective of the device you are exchanging.

Exchange offers on other smartphones

Apart from Apple devices, Flipkart has also mentioned Android devices such as the Motorola Moto Z and the OnePlus 3T on ‘Reasons to buy the iPhone 8 on Flipkart’ page. The Moto Z comes with an exchange value of Rs. 8,550 and the OnePlus 3T comes with an exchange value of Rs. 10,550.

To claim the Citi Credit card offer, you need to order the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus by 17:59 PM on September 29.

Apart from the discounts and cashbacks, Flipkart has listed some more reasons to buy the new Apple devices from Flipkart. The next listed reason is fastest delivery - Flipkart will deliver the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus on the release date, i.e., September 29 in selected cities across the country.
