iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max reportedly hit with a charging bug

The brand new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max handsets have only been in customers' hands for a week, but already a problem has emerged – namely that some models don't start charging when plugged into the mains if the screen is off when they're connected.

At the moment the issue is only anecdotal, but based on forum posts and YouTube videos it seems to be genuine, even if the scale of the problem isn't clear yet. We've tested charging behavior on our own iPhone XS in the TechRadar office and it works fine, so this isn't something that's affecting every handset out there.

Some users report it's phone inactivity that causes the charging cable not to be recognized, rather than the screen being off. In just about every case we've seen, charging carries on normally as soon as the phone gets unlocked or is interacted with.

It's a bug's life

Considering charging is only disabled under certain conditions, it seems that this is likely to be a software issue that Apple could fix with a quick iOS update, rather than having to recall millions of iPhones only days after the first batch got sent out. As yet Apple hasn't commented on the issue, but we'll post its response here if one arrives.

One possibility is that the bug is related to the restrictions Apple has placed around USB access to the iPhone with iOS 12. They're designed to make it more difficult to extract data from the device when the screen is locked, but it might have interfered with charging too.

For now though that's just speculation – we'll have to wait and see what the Apple engineers say when they've taken a look at the issue. Considering iOS 11 had its fair share of bugs, including autocorrect problems and unresponsive screens, Apple will want to get this one fixed as quickly as it can.

Things we are excited to see in Mate 20 launch in October

Apple released the iPhone XS last weekend with a price tag that can run as high as AED 6,000 (US$ 1,600) and as good of a phone as it is, you might want to wait some time before committing that much money. There are tons of new Android phones being announced in October from the likes of LG, Samsung, HMD and Huawei. And based on recent leaks, the Huawei Mate 20 is shaping up to be the phone to beat this year.

Where the iPhone XS and the Galaxy Note 9 were minor upgrades from last years models with not much in terms of innovation, the Huawei Mate 20 is looking to be brand new handsets with technologies that will power the next generation of smartphones.

Let’s take a look at some of the features that are expected on the Mate 20 series based on the recent leaks leading up to the launch in mid-October.

Design

According to a leak on Weibo, the Huawei Mate 20 series might feature a smooth and symmetrical body This source also suggests that the Huawei Mate 20 series features the world’s first design where the speaker and microphone are integrated into the USB Type-C port.

Other than that, some "official marketing pictures" have been picked up by WinFuture and show three color options, with black and blue finishes showing up alongside Huawei's stylish Twilight, two-tone finish.

There is a feature which is noticeably absent - a fingerprint scanner. This could indicate that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro could come with face recognition technology as its main biometric function, but according to the same source it will also feature an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Chipset

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro will pack the new Kirin 980 chipset which was the world’s first officially announced 7nm silicon and boast an octa-core setup. We’ve covered this new chipset from Huawei claims is 75% faster than its previous generation as far as the CPU is concerned and 46% faster when it comes to the GPU.

Besides being very speedy, power efficiency is supposedly 57% better on the processor and an extremely impressive 178% better on the the GPU. These advancements should make the Kirin 980 faster and a lot more efficient.

Camera

Huawei has continuously pushed the boundaries with camera technology on their smartphones. The Hauwei Mate 20 series is expected to continue with the three camera setup found on the Huawei P20 Pro released earlier this year. There are bound to be improvements which are most likely be on the software and AI side.

The latest leak suggests that the Mate 20 Pro could have the best camera on a smartphone with the highest DXO Mark score of 116. That's a full seven points higher than the previous top score of 109, achieved by the Huawei P20 Pro, but since the Mate 20 Pro is likely to have an upgraded version of that phone’s camera it’s believable.

Wireless Supercharging

One feature that has been lacking on Huawei phones is wireless charging and looks like Huawei is set to make a grand entry with that. An image posted on Weibo shows Huawei's wireless charger LZ80 with a 20W output.

To put things in perspective, Samsung's latest wireless charger has an output of 9W.  Whilst Qi wireless charging standard only supports up to 15W, it is believed there will be some kind of custom chipset in Huawei devices that would allow it to take advantage of the charger’s full power. This could be built into the Kirin 980, meaning the Mate 20 will be able to use the full 20W, while other Qi compatible devices will only have access to 15W.

Huawei is expected to reveal the Mate 20 series on October 16th in London. TechRadar will be there to cover the event and report about any of the above and all other exciting announcements from the launch.

Voice unlock and more advanced tech tipped for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro

As the official October 16 launch date of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro approaches, we're hearing more and more about what to expect from Huawei's latest premium handset. The latest leaks suggest the phone will come packed with some cutting-edge mobile tech.

According to internal presentation slides obtained by Israeli tech site Girafa, we're going to see something called Bone Voice ID, which will use bundled earphones and bone conduction technology to verify users based on their voice. There will also be an in-display fingerprint scanner on the front of the phone, which we've heard about before.

The slides also show off the Nano SD memory card format that Huawei supposedly has in the works – the primary difference between this proprietary tech and standard memory cards seems to be a smaller size, but we'll no doubt hear more on October 16.

Specs appeal

There's also mention of the smartphone specs we've seen mooted before: a huge 6.9-inch screen, the Kirin 980 chipset, 6GB of RAM and a 4,200mAh battery. It looks like Huawei is going to pack everything it's got into the Pro version of the Mate 20.

We've also got confirmation of the specs of the standard Huawei Mate 20 – a 6.53-inch screen, 4GB of RAM and a 4,000mAh battery. This smartphone looks set to arrive without the in-display fingerprint scanner, just a standard one around the back, but both phones will have Voice ID as well as an advanced face unlock mechanism.

Finally, it looks like both the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro will have a 24-megapixel, triple-lens camera pixel camera around the back. Of course the Huawei Mate 20 Lite has already been unveiled, the lower-end of the three handsets.

iPhone XS drop test: see the Apple's 'most durable glass ever' fall from two stories

Apple boldly claims that its iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are outfitted with the 'most durable glass ever on a smartphone,' and we're seeing that put to the test today.

While results may vary, the iPhone XS was able to survive an 11-foot drop in a daring test by Tom's Guide. There'a drop test video proving it landed safely despite falling face-first onto concrete.

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max also survived three-foot, four-foot, and five-foot drops, landing in various ways: on the bottom edge, face-down, and the back of the phone. These are the normal heights from which clumsy people (not you or me, of course) accidentally drop phones all of the time.

It took a 20-foot plunge to smash the iPhone XS Max glass in the drop test finale. The two-story drop rendered the smartphone inoperable. It seemed to have more cracks than pixels – and went from Super Retina to super ruined.

The case for iPhone XS cases

Today's drop test tells us two things: first, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are probably using Corning's new Gorilla Glass 6 (Apple never says for sure), which is supposedly two times stronger than Gorilla Glass 5. The Samsung Galaxy S10 may get the same extra-strong protection.

Second, even with the extra protection, you're probably going to want to invest in an iPhone XS case if you're buying a iPhone that starts at $999 / £999 / AU$1,629. You also may want to invest in AppleCare+, too.

Apple's claim that it uses the 'most durable glass ever on a smartphone' does check out, at least for this particular test. Tom's Guide wisely mentions "your own mileage may vary." We've often found that to be true in our own personal iPhone drop tests that are also totally-on-purpose (but not really).

We get another leaked render of the Razer Phone 2

We get another leaked render from Evan Blass of the new Razer Phone 2 that doesn't look that different from the first generation model

Razer Phone 2: what we want to see

Moto G6 vs Moto G6 Play

Razer Phone 2 leaked render seemingly shows the phone from front and back

We’ve already had a close look at the likely design of the Razer Phone 2 from the front, and now a new leaked render seemingly shows it from both the front and the back, highlighting some differences to the original Razer Phone.

We say seemingly because as ever with a leak it might not be accurate, but the image comes from Evan Blass, who has a good track record.

The most interesting aspect of the back is the green Razer logo, which Blass claims lights up, making for a rather showier look than the plain white logo on the original Razer Phone.

The dual-lens rear camera is also in a different position here, as it’s more central than the camera on its predecessor, which sat towards the top left corner.

Little else has changed

Otherwise the back of the Razer Phone 2 shown here is a plain black slab, much as it was on the Razer Phone, though it’s possibly a bit darker here.

The front also looks virtually identical, complete with large speakers above and below the display. This also matches up with an earlier leaked render.

It’s worth noting that there’s no sign of a fingerprint scanner, which could mean the Razer Phone 2 has one built into the screen, but the original Razer Phone has one built into the power key on the side of the handset, so it’s just as likely that’s the case again here.

In any case, we’ll know soon, as the company is officially unveiling the Razer Phone 2 on October 10.

Google Pixel 3 XL leaked marketing video shows off slick new AR camera features

Google has confirmed a launch date of October 9 for its upcoming 2018 flagship handsets, but at this point, it seems like there'll be few surprises left as to what the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL will bring to the competitive smartphone market.

And today, two more videos have surfaced which add to the already overwhelming number of leaks doing the rounds on the internet – and they essentially show off the upcoming handsets in full.

One of the leaks, which online publication MySmartPrice was able to lay its hands on, is an official two-minute long video that comes direct from Google’s own marketing campaign.

No more surprises

Google’s leaked marketing video doesn’t show anything that hasn't already been speculated about, but it does confirm a lot of that conjecture. For example, the OS it's running is clearly the Android 9.0 Pie, with the standard navigation gestures, and we also see the return of the Active Edge squeezable sides we saw in the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, which are used to activate Google Assistant.

Other features that have been migrated to the new generation of Pixels are the Tap To Wake feature, which uses a double tap to switch on the screen, along with a double press on the Power button to launch the camera. A long press on the Power button takes a screenshot, and pulling open the notification pane is also possible by swiping down on the rear fingerprint scanner.

Other handy features include the a plethora of swipe gestures to take the user through various camera modes, and the camera even has some new AR features like the ability to scan in email addresses straight from business cards. A tap on the digitized address then opens a new compose window in Gmail.

Compare the pair

While Google’s marketing campaign shows off the features of the upcoming flagships, another video posted by Russian YouTube user Rozetked offers up a comparison between the new Clearly White Pixel 3 XL to its Pixel 2 XL predecessor.

Both phones are identical in size, however the screen on the Pixel 3 XL is clearly larger, and adds a rather prominent notch.

The hands-on video also confirms wireless charging and claims the haptic feedback is improved on the new model.

Google has retained the single rear camera on the new handset – but that shouldn't disappoint as like the single-camera Pixel 2s, the upcoming flagships are seemingly set to have high-scoring cameras, which saw them find a spot in our best camera phone round-up.

The only thing that hasn’t yet leaked about the third-generation Pixels is pricing information. But with the official launch just round the corner, we don’t have long to find out how expensive these new flagships will be.

Realme 2 Pro has a dewdrop notch and starts at ₹13,990

After being a subject of various leaks from the past few weeks, Realme finally took wraps off of its newest smartphones. The Realme 2 Pro is an enhanced beast altogether and has a slew of some really cool features which will appeal to the young millennial audience it is targeted at.

Along with the Realme 2 Pro, the company also announced an affordable phone in the form of Realme C1 which is being offered at an introductory price of ₹6,999. One of the striking features about the C1 is that it features a notch design on the front.

Realme 2 Pro Specifications

The Realme 2 Pro features a 6.3-inch full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) LCD panel which is topped with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 for added protection against accidental drops. The LCD panel has a dewdrop styled notch on top which gives the screen a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and covers 90.8% of the area.

The dewdrop notch on the front houses a camera, light & distance sensor along with the earpiece.

The smartphone has a glossy back which is the result of a 15-layer lamination process that the phone has gone under. Also present is a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel along with support for face unlock. Realme 2 Pro is thickest at 8.5mm and weighs around 174g.

Under the hood, the Realme 2 Pro is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset. The SD 660 is also supported by Qualcomm’s Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIE) which lends some special capabilities to an already powerful SoC. The octa-core Kryo 260 CPU is clocked at 1.95GHz and is backed by Adreno 512 as the graphics renderer.

On the RAM and storage front, the Realme 2 Pro comes in three variants. The basic model features 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 256GB via microSD card. The next variant gets a bump in the RAM and has 6GB of RAM paired with 64GB storage. The maxed out Realme 2 Pro has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.

The Realme 2 pro runs on Android 8.1 Oreo-based ColorOS 5.2.

Realme 2 Pro sports a dual camera setup which consists of a primary 16MP rear and a secondary 2MP camera. The primary rear camera is equipped with the Sony IMX398 sensor and has a wide f/1.7 aperture.

Qualcomm’s AIE helps the camera in identifying 16 different scenes and offers the user a set of preset setting for capturing pictures. The wide aperture on the Realme 2 Pro should, on paper, translate into a good low-light performance but we’ll reserve our verdict till we test the phone ourselves.

Remember the dewdrop notch on the front? That tiny housing accommodates a 16MP snapper for selfies and borrows some features from the AI engine such as the ability to recognize 296 different spots in a frame.

Realme 2 Pro draws power from a 3,500mAh battery which should easily last a day on moderate usage. The company promises 16.5 hours of standby time, though the phone does not support fast charging.

Realme C1 specifications

The C1 is the second smartphone to be announced by Realme today. It is an entry-level smartphone which features a 6.2-inch HD+ (1520 x 720 pixels) display and is covered by a layer of Gorilla Glass. It has a notch design on the front which is a rarity in this budget segment.

The Realme C1 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset with an octa-core CPU clocked at 1.8GHz. This is backed by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage which is expandable by up to 256GB.

Realme C1 runs on ColorOS5.1 which is based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Even after being so affordable, the C1 also sports twin cameras on the back. There’s a primary 13MP snapper accompanied by a 2MP sensor. The rear cameras support PDAF, portrait mode, AI beautification. The front is home to a 5MP selfie camera which has a f/2.2 aperture and supports face unlock.

The C1 has a large 4,230mAh battery which according to the company will last up to 18 hours on music playback, 15 hours on video viewing, 10+ hours on gaming and 18 hours on internet browsing on a single charge.

Realme 2 Pro and Realme C1 Price and availability

Realme 2 Pro comes in three color to choose from- Blue Ocean, Black Sea and Ice Lake. The prices start from ₹13,990 for the 4GB RAM variant followed by ₹15,990 for 6GB RAM and ₹17,990 for the maxed out 8GB RAM variant.

On the other hand, the Realme C1 is priced at ₹6,999.

Both the smartphones goes on sale on Flipkart from October 11 with data offers from Reliance Jio.

See how to get a 20GB SIM only deal for an incredible £8 per month

To be entirely frank, there's something about cashback that we don't really get. 'Pay us for a product or service', the retailer says, 'and we'll give you some money back'. OK then.

But we certainly can't ignore them, and especially when they're as gob-smacking as these SIM only deals with enormous cashback from online phone retailer Mobiles.co.uk. It's currently offering up to £162 on selected SIMO plans on Vodafone, and we'll tell you all about them.

Claim up to £162 cashback with these SIM only deals

The standout figure is on Mobiles' best 20GB SIM plan. It costs an already reasonable £20 per month, but you can claim back £144 cashback. That makes the effective monthly cost over the 12-month contract only £8 per month.

And if 20GB somehow isn't enough data for your streaming, surfing and downloading needs, then crank things up to 40GB. The £162 cashback you can claim means that the £25 monthly payments are effectively reduced to £11.50 per month. You can check out the SIM only price comparison at the bottom of this page, but trust us when we say that 40GB data for £11.50 per month is basically unheard of!

The above tariffs work on so-called 'cashback by redemption'. That means that you have to send an email five times over the course of your contract to tell them to send you one-fifth of your total cashback. A bit of a hassle, but totally worth the slight inconvenience considering the savings.

But if you can't be bothered or know that you'll forget to claim, then there's another option. It's less impressive - but only just. Mobiles.co.uk has also increased the love for its automatic cashback, which means there's no steps to follow after purchase. Just a nice, fat windfall to look forward to.

So that 20GB SIM for £20 SIM gets a £110 cashback boost. Work out the effective monthly payments, and they're down to only £10.83 per month.

Or, if that mega 40GB Vodafone data SIM only deal has caught your attention, then the automatic cashback available comes in at £130 cashback, meaning an average of £14.17 per month payments if you work it out over the course of the year.

Looks like the OnePlus 6T is getting a bigger battery than the OnePlus 6

The OnePlus 6T is likely to launch next month and while we've seen lots of leaks so far - including some potential renders of what the phone will look like - we've only just heard the first word on the battery size.

A leak from Weibo (that's a Chinese social networking site) includes a photo of the battery pack that the source claims will be in the upcoming phone from OnePlus.

If it's real, it means the OnePlus 6T will have a 3,700mAh cell inside, while the last OnePlus phone had a 3,300mAh battery pack.

The leaked image does say the battery may go as low as 3,610mAh, but that's still a substantial difference to the 3,300mAh of the OnePlus 6.

Bigger is better?

Whether this larger battery will translate to longer battery life is unclear, but considering the new phone is rumored to sport the same chipset as the OnePlus 6 we expect it to last for longer if this leak is correct.

The leak also speaks of the Dash Charge technology, which is set to make a return on the OnePlus 6T. That's a surprise as some had expected the company to embrace Oppo's newer 50W charging tech.

Little is known for certain about the OnePlus 6T, but we're expecting to officially hear about it on October 17 according to a leak, and we may hear more specs rumors ahead of that.

Official LG V40 ThinQ teaser confirms the phone has five cameras

While LG isn’t announcing the LG V40 ThinQ until October 4, it has just revealed a lot of details about the phone in a teaser video, including more or less confirming that it has five cameras.

The teaser was posted on LG’s South Korean website and shows the phone from a number of angles, highlighting three cameras on the back with a fingerprint scanner below.

We don’t get a good look at the front of the phone, but the video is very focused on the number five, so it’s a safe bet that there are also two lenses on the front, as has been rumored.

Silky soft with a 6.4-inch screen

The video also mentions that the back of the phone has a soft, silky finish, yet as the text accompanying it explains it’s still made of glass, with a metal frame.

The text also reveals that the LG V40 ThinQ has a 6.4-inch screen, and comes in New Platinum Gray, Carmine Red (which is what we see in the video) and Moroccan Blue colors.

That’s a lot to reveal ahead of launch, but some things, such as the actual specs of the phone, are yet to be revealed. Let’s see if LG can resist spilling the beans until October 4.

Leaked OnePlus 6T renders give us our best look yet at the handset

Even though the OnePlus 6T is likely to launch soon there haven’t been many leaks showing the design of the phone yet, but that all changes now, as leaked renders have just given us a look at the possible design of the handset from all angles.

Shared by MySmartPrice with the help of leaker @OnLeaks, the renders largely match what we’ve seen before, with a teardrop notch on the front, a tiny sliver of bezel at the bottom and an otherwise all-screen design. So a lot like the OnePlus 6, but with an even smaller notch and a likely smaller bezel.

The back is also similar, with a dual-lens camera and a OnePlus logo below it, the main difference being the lack of a fingerprint scanner, which we know is built into the screen on the OnePlus 6T.

The button layout is much the same as the previous handset too, but the dimensions are slightly different, with the OnePlus 6T apparently coming in at 157.5 x 75.7 x 8.2mm, rising to 8.6mm where the camera sticks out.

The OnePlus 6 on the other hand is 155.7 x 75.4 x 7.8mm, so the OnePlus 6T is seemingly slightly larger and thicker.

The thicker build could hint at a larger battery, while the longer length and width is probably to house a slightly larger screen, rumored to be 6.4 inches.

Not yet confirmed

It is however worth taking these renders with a pinch of salt. While they largely line up with what we’ve seen before they don’t match every leak – for example one recent one showed a triple-lens camera, though we’re not convinced we’ll get that.

These also don’t appear to be official renders. @OnLeaks claims they’re based on a factory CAD (computer-aided design), but even if that came from an official source they may not show the final design.

Still, with the OnePlus 6T possibly launching on October 17 we’d expect to be getting fairly accurate leaks, so this could be the shape of the phone to come.
