New MacBooks and iPad Pros are said to be coming soon, but not at WWDC 2018

There are new MacBook computers and iPad Pro tablets coming in 2018, according to a new report today. It's just not going to happen at Apple's WWDC 2018 keynote.

Instead, a refreshed MacBook Pro 2018 and 12-inch MacBook with new Intel chips, and a low-cost MacBook Air 2018, will be ready later this year, says Bloomberg.

The same applies to the iPad Pro 2018, which is said to be undergoing an overhaul with Face ID, just like on the iPhone X. It's similarly said to be on track for 'later'.

Multiplayer in AR?

The keynote will instead focus on incremental iOS 12 software (an effort to stamp out iOS 11 problems) and what's being called "ARKit 2.0", suggests Bloomberg.

The ARKit upgrade sounds fascinating. It's expected to let users play AR games against each other in the same virtual environment. It's shaping up to be the advent of AR multiplayer on devices (iPhones and iPads) readily accessible by the masses.

The report also describes how virtual objects have the power to be dropped into an area and remain there, virtually in place. It's all foreshadowing what's to come from Apple AR glasses, rumored to launch in 2020.

HTC Desire 12 and 12 Plus launch with 'new-retro' features at a lower cost

Google Pixel 3 XL could have a notch and two front-facing cameras

Until today we didn’t know much about the Pixel 3 range, but if new rumors are accurate there’s now a whole lot that we know, especially about the Pixel 3 XL, which will apparently have a notch and two front-facing cameras.

That’s according to ‘people familiar with the matter’ speaking to Bloomberg, who added that the phone will also have a bezel at the bottom of the screen.

They say that the notch won’t be as wide as it is on the iPhone X, but that it will be taller, and Google apparently aims to completely remove the bezels from a future Pixel phone but is keeping them this year to allow for front-facing stereo speakers.

The standard Pixel 3 meanwhile apparently won’t have a notch, instead sporting a similar design to the Pixel 2, and will only have a single front-facing camera, but both phones are said to have an upgraded single-lens rear camera. These claims match up with leaked screen protector images we saw a few days ago.

The report adds that the Pixel 3 range might be built by Foxconn for the first time (that being the main company that manufactures iPhones among many other products) and that – unsurprisingly – the engineering talent that Google acquired from HTC earlier this year will be heavily involved in developing the new devices.

Additional evidence and OLED screens

But this isn’t the only source of Pixel 3 news, as leaker I Ice universe has also posted on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging site), claiming that LG Display will be supplying OLED panels with notches to Google smartphones.

That both backs up the theory that at least one Pixel 3 model will have a notch and tells us that they might well use OLED screens.

That latter point is unsurprising, since the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL both use OLED, but it’s worth noting, since OLED can deliver better contrast than LCD.

Of course, none of this is confirmed just yet and we likely won’t know the truth until the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are announced, probably in October.

Samsung Galaxy S10 may be ready to include an in-display fingerprint scanner

Leaks have suggested Samsung has been developing an in-display fingerprint sensor over the last few years, and a new report says it will be ready for next year's Galaxy S10.

Vivo and Huawei both have products on the market that include in-display fingerprint sensors, and ETNews is reporting that Samsung may feel pressured to join them.

Citing industry sources, the site claims the company will be ready to include the technology on the Samsung Galaxy S10 despite being nervous of including the tech in the past.

The report also suggests Samsung Display is making the Super AMOLED display element while Qualcomm will include an ultrasonic solution to allow for the scanner inside.

That's different to have Vivo achieves it with an optical solution.

Coming next year

It seems the scanner won't be ready for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which is expected to launch in either August or September this year.

In-display fingerprint sensor technology has been a long time coming as it needs to be both accurate and speedy, which is something both Huawei and Vivo have seemed to think is now possible as they've included it on consumer-ready phones.

Huawei's Porsche Design Mate RS included an in-display fingerprint sensor, but it also included a normal scanner as well to ensure you've got a secure way of unlocking your phone.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S10, we expect to hear about it in the first quarter of 2018 with a late February or early March launch, considering that will be a year after the Samsung Galaxy S9's release.

Moto G6 now available at Amazon Prime-exclusive price

Motorola's latest budget champion, the Moto G6, has finally launched. And there's good news for Prime subscribers. It's now available as an Amazon Prime Exclusive phone. That means that this already impressive budget phone just got even more affordable.

Motorola's Moto G line has long been known for its solid budget offering. It paired decent internals, some higher end features, and a design that has continued to veer toward premium with each passing year. The Moto G6 continues in the tradition with amazing success.

The new Moto G6 features the most premium design yet seen in an affordably phone with 3D glass, an aluminum frame, a dual-sensor camera on the back, and a thin fingerprint scanner on the front. The centerpiece of the new smartphone is its leap into high screen-to-body ratio territory with a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display that offers a lot of screen space without making the phone unwieldy.

From the outside, the Moto G6 looks like other premium smartphones. The camera may not be as capable, and the processor and internal storage won't be as fast or capacious. But, at the price, it speeds through tasks well enough on Android 8.0 Oreo, and microSD support means storage space is easy to upgrade.

The Moto G6 is available here for $234.99 and supports AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and in the US, Google's Project Fi.

Nokia confirms Android P update across all their smartphones

During Nokia’s launch event in Moscow on Tuesday, the company’s global marketing manager Neil Broadley confirmed that all the new Nokia phones will be receiving an upgrade to Android P. This applies to all the phones launched after Nokia’s revival, including the newly launched Nokia 2 (2018), 3 (2018) and the 5 (2018).

To recall, the company assured to provide the latest Android update on all its phones. It’s also true that many companies have made such promises, but failed to keep them later on. But fortunately, the Finnish phone maker is sticking to the plan as of now.

The update will bring the new version of Android to the following devices-

  • Nokia 6 (2017)
  • Nokia 5 (2017)
  • Nokia 3 (2017)
  • Nokia 7 plus
  • Nokia 8 Sirocco
  • Nokia 5.1
  • Nokia 3.1
  • Nokia 6.1
  • Nokia X6
  • Nokia 2 (2017)
  • Nokia 2.1

Moreover, HMD CPO Juho Sarivikas also confirmed that the Nokia 8 will get the Nokia Pro Camera mode after the next update that rolls out this Friday, June 1.

For those unaware, all the Nokia phones are a part of Google’s Android One programme. These phones are essentially stock Android phones, and bring along a guarantee that it’s a stable version of Android that’s free of bloatware.

Also, with Android One, the devices receive up to two years of upgrades to the latest version of Android. Which basically means there’s no endless waiting for newer updates. It’s further topped up with three consecutive years of Android monthly security updates.

OnePlus 6 face unlock can seemingly be fooled by a photo

So far we’re yet to see a perfect face unlock system – even the one on the iPhone X can be fooled if you put enough work in, but it seems like the OnePlus 6’s might be easier to bypass than many.

In a video posted to Twitter, @rikvduijn shows the phone being unlocked by a cut out photo of his face, held in front of his friend’s face. Worse still, it apparently works even if the photo is black and white.

You can see in the video that it appears to take a few attempts to unlock the phone with a photo, but that still leaves it worryingly insecure.

Under investigation

The Twitter user who posted the video claims to have heard from OnePlus that the company is now investigating the issue, so perhaps a patch will be issued, but there’s only so much a software update will be able to do, so we wouldn’t count on face unlock on the OnePlus 6 ever being anywhere close to as secure as a fingerprint scanner.

Still, fingerprint scanning is at least an option, which it isn’t on the iPhone X, and the OnePlus 6 isn’t alone in being fooled by a photo, as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is similarly easy to trick.

Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, Mi Band 3 images surface ahead of launch

Chinese smartphone-maker Xiaomi is all set to launch its latest flagship device, the Mi 8, MIUI 10 and the Mi Band 3 at its eighth annual event in China on 30 May and ahead of the launch, some images of the Mi 8, Mi 8 SE and the Mi Band 3 have surfaced online.

After Mi 6, Xiaomi has skipped the Mi 7 and it has decided to go with the Mi 8 as this is Xiaomi’s eighth anniversary. Earlier, Xiaomi was expected to launch only the Mi 8 at the event, but leaked press images have revealed that the company will also launch a Special Edition Mi 8 dubbed as Mi 8 SE.

Xiaomi had earlier revealed that the Mi 8 will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 SoC and the Mi 8 SE is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 710 SoC. The image has also revealed that both the device will feature notch displays and the Mi 8 SE will feature a smaller display compared to the Mi 8.

Additionally, promo images of the Xiaomi Mi 8 have been spotted on Slashleaks, revealing the design and some features of the device. The image reveals the notch display, bottom chin, AI dual rear camera setup and the fingerprint sensor at the back.

Xiaomi has posted an image on Twitter with the Mi logo in the middle which is surrounded by eight images of landmarks from eight different countries. These landmarks are placed in an ‘8’, hinting that these are the countries where the Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE may be launched.

The eight counties include India, Egypt, Spain, Russia, France, Vietnam, Thailand and Italy. While China is not mentioned in this image, the devices will be launched in China initially and then make their way to other countries. Xiaomi has scheduled an event in India on 7 June and it is expected to launch the Redmi Y2 at the event.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE will both feature a notch display and dual rear cameras. The Mi 8 retail box had revealed that the device will have 3D face recognition and 3D AR emojis like iPhone X’s Animoji. A teaser posted on Weibo by the company’s official account has teased the Animoji-like feature from Xiaomi, revealing characters such as Xiaomi’s official mascot, a fox, a pig and a panda singing the company’s tune.

The Mi Band 3 has also been leaked, revealing the display of the device and as reported earlier, it is expected to feature a 2.5D curved display. Earlier, it was being speculated that Xiaomi might ditch the physical button but the new leak hints that Xiaomi may retain the physical button below the display.

OnePlus won't make a mid-range phone until at least 2021

It looks like you won't be able to buy a follow-up device to 2015's OnePlus X, or at least not until 2021.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has told Gadgets 360 the company intends to only offer one flagship device at a time for the next three years, following the release of the OnePlus 6.

That means the company has no intention of revealing a second mid-range phone alongside future flagship handsets. That has been the situation since June 2016 when Lau confirmed to TechRadar the company didn't plan to make a OnePlus X2, but now he has confirmed it's still the case.

Currently OnePlus ensures stock is depleted for models at the end of the six month life cycle before releasing a new product, and the company intends to keep doing that.

For three more years

Lau explained, “The feedback is very much 'we want to have the latest device’, and there’s not a lot of community giving feedback ‘we would have an interest or a demand in being able to purchase an older device'.

“Another key issue with this is that we very much have a focus and a commitment to not dropping prices across the lifecycle of a device. That would then very much be a strange situation if you were to introduce a new device, which would be close to the price of the former device, but they are roughly at the same price point.

"Then you would likely have no one going for the older device.”

OnePlus operates on slim profit margins and has a lot of factors to consider when pricing up its new phones, so it makes sense the company wants to keep focusing on the flagship level for the next few years.

Lau also explained how he believes the notch on the front of phones such as the OnePlus 6 will gradually start to slim down over phone generations with the aim of a full-screen experience in the future.

To achieve that, Lau thinks we'll see the introduction of in-display cameras to allow for selfies without a notch at the top of your screen.

Yesterday we heard about an always-on display mode for the OnePlus 6 that was removed at the last moment before release to ensure the phone had suitable battery life.

Nokia 5.1, 3.1 and 2.1 India price accidentally listed on the company website

Three new Nokia-branded phones launched in Russia's capital city Moscow on Tuesday. The new phones fall under the affordable category and promise pure Android experience similar to the existing Nokia phones. Interestingly, the India pricing of the phones was accidentally listed on the company's website soon after the launch.

New phones include an entry level Nokia 2.1, followed by the Nokia 3.1 and the Nokia 5.1. As the name suggest, these phone succeed last years models from the company, you just have to take the '.1' off from the names.

As expected, the company has now taken down the price information, but Smartprix managed to grab the screenshots to keep a proof ready.

The Nokia 5.1, 3.1 and 2.1 were listed for Rs. 12,499, Rs. 9,499 and Rs. 6,999 respectively.

All the phones carry the same design that Nokia has achieved after its revival. They look solid and have a distinct identity when compared to most phones in this range.

While the Nokia 5.1 and 3.1 will run the Android 8.1 under the Android One programme, the cheaper Nokia 2.1 is based on Android Go Oreo platform.

HMD Global hasn't confirmed the release date for India yet. However, the accidental listing has given us few hints about the price of the phones.

Nokia 5.1, 3.1 and 2.1 arrive with eye-catching price tags

There are three new, highly affordable Nokia-branded smartphones have launched, offering an Android experience at a price many will be able to afford.

The new handsets are the Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 2.1, and they are the successors to the Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 from 2017.

The new Nokia 5 (2018) features a 5.5-inch, 18:9 display with a full HD+ resolution, octa-core chipset, 2GB/3GB of RAM, 16GB/32GB of storage, microSD slot, 16MP rear camera, 8MP wide-angle front camera, Android 8.1 Oreo and a 2,960mAh battery.

That's all wrapped in a premium metal unibody that's available in three colors: Satin Copper, Tempered Blue and Black.

The Nokia 5.1 release date is set for July and prices starting at €189 (around $220, £165, AU$290) for the 2GB/16GB option, while the 3GB/32GB configuration will set you back €219 (around $255, £190, AU$330).

Getting cheaper

Next up is the new Nokia 3 (2018), with a 5.2-inch HD, 18:9 display, octa-core chipset, 2GB/3GB of RAM, 16GB/32GB of RAM, 13MP rear camera, 8MP wide-angle front snapper, Android 8.1 Oreo and a 2,990mAh battery.

The Nokia 3.1 will be available sooner, with a release date set for June, and it'll cost you €139 ($160, £120, AU$210) for the 2GB/16GB variant and €169 ($200, £150, AU$260) for the 3GB/32GB version.

Finally, and rounding off the trio of new low-cost Nokia phones, we have the new Nokia 2. Unlike the other two phones, the Nokia 2.1 runs Android Oreo Go Edition - a lighter version of Google's operating system specifically made for cheaper handsets with less power.

The Nokia 2.1 comes with a 5.5-inch HD display, Snapdragon 425 chipset, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage (of which 4.7GB is available), microSD slot and a 4,000mAh battery.

It's claimed the Nokia 2.1 can last two days on a single charge, and it'll set you back just $115 (around £85, AU$150) when it goes on sale in July.

Three reshuffles commercial unit as CFO departs

Three CFO Richard Woodward is to take on the entirety of the operator’s commercial activities following the departure of Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Grant Stevenson.

Stevenson became CCO in February 2017 having previously served as a senior advisor to parent company CK Hutchison and as CFO for Three’s Scandinavian business.

He is returning home to Australia, where he has also worked for Hutchison ventures, for family reasons after 18 months in his present role.

Three reshuffle

The shakeup is significant because the commercial activities of Three will be combined into a single unit. Previously Stevenson was responsible for Three-branded products, while Woodward controlled wholesale and non-Three branded services like the SMARTY SIM-Only MVNO.

Darren Purkis, current deputy CFO, will be promoted to the top job having been with Three for nine years, during which he has been retail CFO and Finance Director. He previously had roles at Warehouse Fashions, Borders Books, Kingfisher and Marks & Spencer.

Both changes will take effect on 1 June.

Three now has more than 10 million users on its network, which now delivers 4G to 98.5 per cent of the UK population. Revenue for the past year was up 7 per cent to £2.4 billion as Three recorded its lowest ever handset contract churn rate of just 1.1 percent.

OnePlus 6 dumped always-on display mode to save battery life

The OnePlus 6 offers a lot of features for your money, but it doesn't have wireless charging, IP water-resistance, or an always-on-display mode – at least not anymore.

It turns out a briefly present always-on display mode was buried in the settings of the new phone, as a Redditor discovered, but it was removed in a day one update.

The reason of its removal? The OnePlus team didn't want to impact the battery life by including the battery siphoning display option popular in other Android phones.

True enough, we've tested the OnePlus 6 and found its battery performance to be strong, thanks to its 3,300mAh battery capacity and 1080p resolution screen.

More to come for OnePlus 6T?

The reaction to the news of this axed OnePlus 6 always-on display feature is mixed, with many 'Don't care' replies, and others determined to find a way to reactive it.

We've reached out to OnePlus to see if the always-on display will ever return, as it's other top Android phones, like the Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S9 and LG G7.

But you may have to wait until the inevitable OnePlus 6T to get official support for an always-on display. The good news is that may only be six to eight months away.

Colorful iPhone X2 leak may not be real, but we wish it was

Everyone is desperate for some news on the new iPhones of 2018, but a recent leak that showcases an iPhone donning some new colors probably isn’t trustworthy.

We know that the 2018 iPhone X will arrive in September in a variety of colors, though none of them may take on the whimsical pastel options of the iPhone 5C (as much as we wish that it would.)

Pinning down the origins of the story that the next iPhone will take on some fresh colors seems to have been taken care of by prolific leaker @OnLeaks, who disputes the legitimacy of the leak. Originally said to be an exclusive by a site, @OnLeaks has shared that these pictures actually originated in a MacRumors forum post that has since been removed.

...we want new colors though

Recent iPhone models have played it safe with run-of-the-mill colors like white, black, and on the rare occasion, red for its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. And even though this leak has more or less been proven to be false, it’s always possible that the next wave of iPhones, rumored to be called iPhone XI or iPhone X2, could introduce a new color, perhaps in a bid to distinguish the high-end model from the cheaper one.

Just recently, a leak surfaced that claimed to show off a golden iPhone X that never went into production, or at least hasn’t yet. It’s always possible that Apple could surprise us with it soon, but for now, it looks like these leaked purple and green models may not ever come to be.

Nokia 3310 can survive a jolt of one million volts

The Nokia 3310 already has a reputation for being one of the most durable phones ever built. But, did you know that it could survive a million volt shock? A YouTube video by Kreosan English, a channel showcasing experiments in electricity, shows just that.

It plays the Nokia 3310 against a '10-core' smartphone to see who can survive one million volts of electricity.

The smartphone dies out after just one round but Nokia 3310 survives repeated electrocutions.

How does the Nokia 3310 do it?

The science is pretty simple. In the moment when electricity is being pumped through the phones, both their screens exhibit distortion.

The reason the 3310 survives is basically because it doesn't have as many sensors or even a touch screen display. The smartphone, on the hand, has a major dependence on both. So, when the sensor array gets burned out, the smartphone is, more or less, useless.

The simpler, the better, applies perfectly in this situation. The Nokia feature phone's simplicity and scarcity were the primary reasons behind its survival. Then again, how often are you encounter a million volts in real life?

Smartphone market returns to growth in Q1 2018

Following the first ever drop in worldwide sales, Gartner’s latest figures show the smartphone market returned to growth during the first quarter of 2018.

Smartphone shipments rose 1.3 per cent year-on-year to 383 million, representing 84 per cent of the total 455 million mobile phones sold during the three-month period.

Analysts noted that lower rates of handset upgrade impacted the high-end of the market, although better quality cheaper handsets led to some growth in the mid-range segment.

High-end growth

"Demand for premium and high-end smartphones continued to suffer due to marginal incremental benefits during upgrade," explained Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. "Demand for entry-level smartphones (sub-$100) and low mid-tier smartphones (sub-$150) improved due to better-quality models."

Despite lower sales, Samsung is still the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer with 78.6 million shipments and a 20.5 per cent share of the market, while Apple increased its share to 14.1 per cent thanks to sales of 55 million. However Gartner predicts there could be issues ahead if market trends persist.

"Even though demand for Apple's iPhone X exceeded that of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the vendor struggled to drive significant smartphone replacements, which led to slower-than-expected growth in the first quarter of 2018," added Gupta. "With its exclusive focus on premium smartphones, Apple needs to significantly raise the overall experience of its next-generation iPhones to trigger replacements and lead to solid growth in the near future."

Chinese success

While other Chinese manufacturers floundered due to market saturation in China, Huawei and Xiaomi’s international success ensured they were unaffected. Huawei cemented its position at number three with 40 million devices and a 10.5 per cent share thanks to the success of the Huawei P20, while Xiaomi saw growth of 124 per cent to 28.5 million shipments and 7.4 per cent of the market.

Xiaomi smartphones are set to be released in the UK for the first time thanks to a distribution agreement with Three’s parent CK Hutchison across Europe, a deal which could boost its growth even further. As for Huawei, it is much further along in its expansion.

"[Huawei’s] future growth increasingly depends on the vendor ramping up share in Emerging Asia/Pacific and resolving issues in the U.S. market, through the development of a stronger consumer brand,” continued Gupta.

“Huawei's attempt to grow its premium smartphone portfolio with its recent launches of the P20, P20 Pro and Honor 10 helps raise its competitiveness and growth potential.”
