The beloved Nokia 3310 is back with 4G LTE and Android

One of the bombshell announcements of MWC 2017 was the revamped Nokia 3310. Following up on the buzz at MWC 2018 will be tough for manufacturer HMD Global, but it will give it a try with a 4G-enabled version of the phone called the Nokia 3310 4G.

Unlike the top-secret Samsung Galaxy S9, the 3310 4G has actually already been announced in China, but isn’t confirmed for arrival elsewhere – these are the sort of details we look forward to being revealed at MWC.

Even so, the device is in the open and as such, we know a lot about it. The 4G-friendly 3310 will look the same as last year’s model, but the software inside is reportedly improved over a Java-based platform to an Android-based operating system made by Chinese retail giant Alibaba – though that could change if it makes it to the US, UK or AU regions.

The big 4G differences

Hopping up from 2G and 3G to 4G with the new version of the Nokia 3310 comes with its share of perks, including the ability to act as a Wi-Fi hot spot, and high-definition VoLTE calling support.

Since the phone doesn’t appear to have changed, the same can presumably be said about its battery life. Based on projections, 4G looks to take a heavy toll on the 3310, bringing the lifespan down to about five hours of talk time compared to the 2G version’s 15-hour target.

Global availability of the Nokia 3310 4G is unconfirmed, as is its price, but we expect at least a $20-30 premium for the feature compared to the 3G version, which sits at $59 in the US, £59.99 in the UK and AU$89.95 in Australia.

If it shows up at MWC at the end of February, Nokia’s nostalgia trip of a phone might not capture hearts and minds that it did last year, but a 4G-enhanced classic will certainly appeal to good amount of people.

Huawei P20 could launch on March 27

Huawei’s next flagship smartphone, the Huawei P20, is likely to launch on March 27 according to an invitation that TechRadar has received.

Huawei’s press invitation doesn’t leave a hint that the P20 will be in attendance, but following a brief back-and-forth over what the Chinese company’s upcoming device will be called, the details confirming such a device seem to be falling into place.

While not the premier flagship in Huawei’s arsenal of phones, the most recent entry, the Huawei P10, was a solid, cohesive effort that featured high-end specs, as well as the company’s signature Leica-engineered optics, packed into a build that’s smaller than what we’ve seen recently in the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

Could we see three P20 models?

The latest rumors appear to confirm the Huawei P20, including two variations on the model: the Huawei P20 Plus and Huawei P20 Lite. Our invite makes a mention of “newly launched devices”, which could play into us seeing multiple models.

This launch is oddly timed, slated a few weeks after MWC 2018 where the Samsung Galaxy S9 will debut. While likely a bid to have a bit of the spotlight to itself, we’ll have to wait another two months to see what Huawei has up its sleeves.

Essential Phone skipping Android Oreo 8.0, will soon receive 8.1

Essential Phone users have been longing for Android Oreo to arrive after it missed its 2017 target. Thankfully, the latest word from the company says that it aims to push the update out via OTA in a few weeks.

The Essential Phone PH-1 currently runs Android Nougat and, interestingly, it won’t be updated to Android Oreo 8.0 at all. it's skip straight to Android Oreo 8.1 instead.

Essential claims that, through its long-running beta program, it discovered “several stability issues” in the core operating system update, Thus it will be putting the work in to issue the updated version to users.

It seems that the release of Oreo on the PH-1 was days away, but anxious fans might now be waiting closer to a month to get a taste.

The good news is that if you’ve got a knack for tinkering and want to preview the latest beta build before it arrives, you can join the beta program here. But, be warned that not only does it require sideloading, it’s not going to be as stable as the build you’re currently running.

What does this say for Oreo 8.0?

Essential brought up that Oreo 8.0 had stability issues, though it’s not clear if these are issues specific to the PH-1, or if they also apply to any other phone that’s having the latest operating system ported.

While the former is an understandable position for a small team that’s trying to deliver on expectations, the latter could spell trouble for devices that are still waiting for the Oreo update, of which there are many.

We previously haven’t heard of such instability problems with Google’s latest operating system, but we’ll be reaching out to manufacturers to see if this is widespread or an isolated case.

iOS apps on Mac computers are still likely to appear in 2018

Apple may be pushing back major iOS feature updates in favor of stability upgrades, but it’s still keen on getting iOS apps onto Mac computers this year, Axios reports.

First revealed in a Bloomberg report late last year, this is one of the few major additions to Apple's software lineup that is expected to sneak through this year, sources speaking to Axios anonymously have confirmed.

Apple’s planned quality-of-life upgrades to macOS in 2018 also include security boosts as well as speeding up the waking and unlocking of Mac systems, according to the report.

These stability and performance boosts through the next versions of macOS and iOS could make way for what might be one of the most important features to come to both operating systems in years.

Catching up with the competition

If Apple were to allow iOS apps to run on Mac systems, this would see the firm catch up to both Microsoft and Google in a big way. Before these reports, Apple had been known to draw firm lines between its two major OS products.

Microsoft launched Windows 10 – in July 2015 – to run nearly seamlessly between PC systems, tablets and phones from the start, while Google brought its Google Play Store and Android apps to Chromebooks early last year.

For the past few years, a clear trend has grown in breaking down the walls between phones, tablets and laptops or desktop computers, and it's one that Apple appears to have been watching to learn how it can one-up previous efforts.

Whether that tactic will end up playing out well for Apple or working against it, not to mention exactly how this implementation will work without touchscreens on Mac computers, won’t likely be answered until WWDC 2018, Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which will be held later this year.

It's all in the screen: Here are the smartphones with the best displays

Having a good quality display is the very basic aspect of any smartphone – while a powerful chipset may be able to render great graphics and deliver smooth performance, without a good quality display, the experience will always remain subpar.

Keeping that in mind, we have curated a list of smartphones with the best displays in the market right now. For this purpose, we have considered aspects like colour reproduction, sunlight visibility, brightness etc.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

AMOLED technology has come a long way and as far as smartphones are concerned, Samsung has pioneered it with its smartphones over the last few years. The company’s latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 8, comes with one of the best displays on smartphones – the phone features a big 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED panel and almost crosses 650 nits when it comes to brightness.

The Galaxy Note 8 also performs great in other aspects like colour accuracy and sunlight visibility.

Another aspect to note is that the Galaxy Note 8 comes with HDR support, allowing you to see a lot more details in the highly dark/bright areas of the scene.

Read the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 review.

Apple iPhone X

The iPhone X represents a bold and a radical step in terms of smartphone design from Apple. Featuring a notch on the top and ditching the Home button, the iPhone X is also the first iPhone to feature an AMOLED panel.

According to several sunlight visibility tests, the iPhone X’s display scores the highest points when compared to any other smartphone launched in 2017. While the display refreshes at a usual rate of 60Hz, the touch sample rate is at 120Hz, giving users an almost instant and smooth reaction. Just like the Galaxy Note 8, the iPhone X also comes with HDR support.

Read the Apple iPhone X review.

Mi Mix 2

Xiaomi made bezel-less smartphones popular with the original Mi Mix. However, for the Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi chose a slightly smaller display at 5.99-inches. However, unlike the top two phones in this list, the Mi Mix 2 comes with an IPS LCD panel.

Although the Mi Mix 2 does not offer Quad HD resolution, it does come with a highly colour accurate screen, beating even the iPhones.

In the mid-range segment, the Mi Mix 2 is a good option that you can consider apart from other phones like the OnePlus 5T and the Honor View 10.

Read the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 review.

OnePlus 5T

The OnePlus 5T rectifies almost all the issues that cropped up with the OnePlus 5, and the displays sees the most significant upgrade in the company’s latest smartphone. While the OnePlus 5 was plagued by the ‘Jelly scrolling’ effect, the OnePlus 5T’s display is nearly flawless.

OnePlus has also embraced the new 18:9 aspect ratio with its latest flagship – the OnePlus 5T comes with a 6-inch Full HD+ Optic AMOLED panel with DCI-P3 support.

Read the OnePlus 5T review.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Smartphones with Quad HD displays are the norm when it comes to flagships, with some of them even offering HDR support, but there is only one smartphone that offers HDR support at 4K resolution. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium also comes with Adaptive Tone Mapping, a feature found in Sony’s BRAVIA TVs, allowing you to enjoy media regardless of the light condition.

Read the Sony Xperia XZ Premium review.

Honor View 10

The Honor View 10 is Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone in the budget segment, offering some of the high-end specs at mid-range prices. In addition to delivering a very good value for money, the Honor View 10 also comes with a 5.99-inch 18:9 display with a Full HD+ resolution. Out in the sunlight, the Honor View 10 can get bright enough to be legible. In terms of colour reproduction, the View 10 can compete very well with high-end phones with IPS LCD panels.

Read the Honor View 10 review.

Xiaomi Mi A1

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is the first Xiaomi smartphone to run on stock Android. Launched under the Android One program, the Mi A1 comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD display. Even though it comes at a budget price, the Mi A1 defies the price when it comes to the display and the overall quality – the phone’s display can reach up to 550 nits brightness and up to 1570:1 contrast ratio, which translates to an excellent experience overall. The colour reproduction is also decent, especially given the budget pricing of the phone.

Samsung provides more evidence the foldable Galaxy X could arrive this year

Samsung has been quite open about its plans to launch a foldable phone as soon as possible, and some rumors even point to a launch by the end of 2018. That might sound optimistic, but even Samsung’s latest financial results suggest that's not out of the question.

At the very least, production of the phone – currently known as the Samsung Galaxy X – might well start this year, as in its Q4 2017 earnings statement Samsung has mentioned that in 2018 its display panel business will "reinforce its competencies in new applications such as foldable [displays]."

That doesn't necessarily mean the handset will be ready to launch this year, but it's possible, and it sounds like it would be by 2019 at the very least.

A foldable future

In fact, in the same statement Samsung notes that "as for the Mobile business, Samsung will continue its efforts to differentiate its smartphones by adopting cutting-edge technologies, such as foldable OLED displays." Though the time frame for that is less clear.

Of course, any plans Samsung has could be held up by issues with the technology, indeed in his latest comment on a folding phone, Samsung's mobile chief Koh Dong-jin said that "there are still durability issues that we need to address."

But it's really starting to sound like the wait for the Samsung Galaxy X might almost be over.

OnePlus Oxygen OS Beta reveals incoming iPhone X like gestures

OnePlus released Oxygen OS Beta 3 build on Tuesday for users of OnePlus 5 and 5T. This latest update comes with bug fixes and improved performance along with some new features.

With this new update, OnePlus has removed the Clipboard app from the phones. OnePlus was recently on the receiving end of a backlash which involved reports stating that the Clipboard app was sending user data to a server in China. In a post, OnePlus says that it removed the app based on users' feedback.

The latest update also comes with a security patch fixing the Spectre vulnerability. Spectre is a security loophole that affected nearly all the computers in the world. The flaw allows attackers to exploit user's data using malicious programs.

OnePlus is also testing gestures which works after disabling the navigation bar. As the 5T has an 18:9 aspect ratio display, enabling gesture control opens up users to more real estate. Users can now swipe up from the middle which brings up the app drawer. The gesture also corresponds to home button actions throughout the interface. Swiping up from the bottom right and left will bring you back to the previous screen. For multitasking, users will have to swipe up and hold from the middle which brings up the multitasking pane.

Another feature added through this Open Beta update is to allow users to choose between sliding up or down when picking up a call. This comes as a relief for many users who often disconnected the call by mistake in an attempt to answer it.

An India specific feature that’s been added puts SMSs into pre-defined categories automatically.

Users should keep in mind that the Open Beta 3 update is a testing build and may not be as stable.

3 reasons why now is a terrible time to buy a new smartphone

It’s the best time to buy a smartphone, which also means that it’s the worst time to buy a smartphone. Confused? Paralyzed? Welcome to the club. There’s always something great on the market to buy, but if intuition serves you right, something even better could be just over the horizon.

We’ve got to be straight with you: the start of the year is the worst time to buy a new smartphone. Don’t do it. Resist the urge. You’ll be rewarded by your patience in just a few months when 2018’s heavy-hitters swing for the fences.

If you’re waiting for the next flagship, we’ve listed the features worth waiting for below. And thankfully, the laws of supply and demand reward those looking for last year’s model on a discount, as well, so keep an eye on our updated list of best phones.

We’ve also added some models we expect to see deeply discounted as 2018 plows onward. Win-win.

Snapdragon 845 will bring more than just a power boost

Qualcomm’s new mobile chipset, Snapdragon 845, will bring the usual set of upgrades to 2018’s smartphones. As such, you can expect a boost in speed, an increased ability to handle robust applications with finesse, and greatly enhanced battery life for power users.

Touching more on the battery performance, we’ve been told that the Snapdragon 845 will yield 30% better performance when it comes to gaming, watching video, or using VR and AR applications.

It also has the potential to bring HDR video capture to smartphones packing the chipset, meaning you’ll have even more HDR content to share or watch on your HDR-ready screen, which are very likely be the standard moving forward for high-end phones.

Embedded fingerprint sensors

This futuristic smartphone feature has been promoted from an “if” to “when” thanks to the launch of the Vivo X20 Plus UD. It takes the trusty fingerprint sensor and embeds it into the display, essentially making it invisible to the naked eye.

While no other 2018 flagship smartphones have been confirmed to carry an in-screen fingerprint scanner, is next trend for makers should jump on.

As far as how that will give you the advantage versus what your current phone has, it’s mostly a cosmetic gain at this point. When we saw Vivo’s smartphone at CES 2018, we noted that the fingerprint sensor built into the all-screen display works as intended, though noticeably slower than what we’ve seen implemented in even mid-range phones, let alone the cream of the crop.

Still, the cool factor is undeniable and it might be worth waiting for if a phone’s worth to you is tied to how it looks.

Better cameras

There are few technologies that have improved as quickly in such a short amount of time than the mini, but mighty cameras inside of a smartphone.

Just in the past three years, the pictures taken with the most expensive, capable devices on the market have gone from “not bad” to “pretty good” and recently, a bit further to “actually good”, which is what you’ll experience today with phones like the iPhone X, Google Pixel 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S8.

But of course, progress never ends, so this year’s flagship devices look to up the ante even more. Samsung is first, which will announce the Samsung Galaxy S9 at MWC 2018 at the end of February. The company has teased that it is taking its camera tech back to the drawing board, but hasn’t yet explained how exactly it will improve over last year’s excellent effort. However, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from providing a few unofficial, yet interesting details.

Samsung's big improvement seems to be the aperture, which is rumored to operate on a variable f/1.5-2.4 scale. The current leader in low-light shooting is the Google Pixel 2 thanks to its advanced machine learning camera software. It remains to be seen how the S9 will perform, but if the numbers provide the results we’re hoping for, the S9 could take the cake.

Other camera features that will play big into 2018’s most alluring phones are optical image stabilization (OIS) for both the front and rear-facing cameras, and packing in a dual-set of lenses for each side to make photos rich with depth and detail.

The unsung hero of what makes for a successful camera on a phone its software. While phones like the LG V30 made bigger promises than it could fulfill in terms of camera performance, its robust camera software made using practically any other phone’s snapper a bit dull in comparison.

Generally, it’s hard to fail at finding a worthy smartphone these days. Given the breadth of options available at a wide range of prices, there’s something for everyone. But if you’re only out for the best of the best, it’s worth waiting for the right time.

Thankfully, the time to buy has almost arrived.

Is the iPhone X a failure? Here’s what you need to know

The reports of the iPhone X death are greatly exaggerated, but like a lot of rumors, there’s a reason people are suddenly talking about Apple canceling what many consider to be its best phone in years.

What’s the real story behind the so-called iPhone X cancellation? Disappointing sales led to a predicted slowdown in production, which then led to an overreaction of what that means for the phone.

About a week ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities shared his latest findings of what’s what on Apple’s year ahead. Most notably, he shared that the current iPhone X model is slated to end its stint on the production line by Summer 2018, which if true, would be the shortest shelf life for any of Apple’s smartphones thus far.

This is the part of the story where, understandably, the red flag goes up for many. On paper, it seems troubling that a phone with such tremendous buzz would fizzle out rather unceremoniously less than 10 months after its debut. But, contrary to the tone of some earlier reporting on the topic, it’s not the end of the iPhone X – it’s just the start.

X is just the beginning

Murmurs about Apple products spread like fire, proved once again by the response to the Kuo’s research first published by AppleInsider

But as is the case with any and all rumors, including analyst predictions, anything that’s not fact should best be taken with a grain of salt – or else you might end up wrong at best, or at worst, creating a whole lot of confusion.

Kuo’s findings highlight that while the first iPhone X might not be part of the company’s current product lineup for long, the story doesn’t end there. Its design and hardware will carry forward in a total of three new iPhone X2 (it could also be called the iPhone XI) smartphones for 2018.

Measuring success for context

The scale in which the success of Apple’s product are measured is different than that of other companies. By that, we mean that if it were a fledgling smartphone company selling hundreds of thousands of a particular smartphone, it might spell good times. But Apple forecasts its product to move in the millions.

Taking a look at what’s considered a “win” for a company as big as Apple can work to provide a lot of useful context for consumers to take away when analyst predictions and rumors like this pop up, as they most certainly will. For a product with as much hype as the iPhone X, Apple and analysts can reasonably predict how many phones it will sell, which informs how many it needs to make in order to meet demand.

Hearing that a product is set to leave the production line will never not sound like failure, or like a premature dashing of an idea mid-execution. And because of that, any sizeable company is an easy target to jump on, let alone Apple.

Given these claims, much more of the iPhone X story is likely to play out in the coming months and we’re excited – but cautious – about what’s to come.

Exciting new iOS 12 features reportedly shelved so Apple can focus on reliability

Best iPhone 8 cases: how to protect your all-glass iPhone

Suiting up your iPhone in a case used to be necessary for a variety of reasons. First off, you want to protect your investment from dings and scratches. Then, before the iPhone 7 arrived, there was the constant worry of dropping it in the sink, or worse, the toilet.

The iPhone 8 continues the water-resistant trail that its predecessor started, but due to its all-glass back, investing in a case is basically a must. That is, unless you like spider web-like cracks putting splinters in your fingers.

We haven’t had a chance to test out any of the following iPhone 8 cases that we’re recommending and we’re not guaranteeing that all of them will be as protective or suave as they claim. However, once we do some testing, this list will become more definitive, so stay tuned.

Note: we've not used all of the cases in this list - instead we've chosen some options from some of our favorite brands. We've ranked these from cheapest to most expensive according to prices at time of writing.

Looking for a simple protective cover that will help you grip your iPhone 8? This option from trusted case manufacturer Speck is basic, but does exactly what you need it to.

It won't protect the screen of your phone, but the grip material at the back will help you keep hold of your phone when you really need to.

We particularly like the look of this case from Spigen and considering its price point it looks very premium. You've got a few different color options for the Neo Hybrid option, but we particularly like the burgundy version of this Spigen case.

Some have complained in online reviews that the buttons are a little difficult to press though, so watch out for that if you're set to buy this case.

Protection for your pricey iPhone 8 can come at a high cost, but it doesn’t have to. The X-Doria Defense Clear case costs less than most ruggedized cases.

One understated feature this one boasts is that it tucks the iPhone 8’s screen under a bit of its lip so as to avoid scratching it on a table if you like to set your phone face down. This case is no frills, but if all you’re looking for is protection on the cheap, look no further.

Tech21 offers a great protective case here that will ensure the back or edges of your phone won't get scratched and will hopefully be able to take a bit of the brunt when you next drop your iPhone 8.

There's no front to this case, so you may want to buy a screen protector, but this see through option may be a good idea if you want to be able to see your phone while it's protected.

Apple makes its own official cases for the iPhone 8, and unsurprisingly they're worthy of inclusion in this list. This one is made from a silicone material that should feel comfortable in your hand.

But perhaps the best element is the color choices on offer here. You have the choice of nine colors, including bright red, so you can make your phone look like the red iPhone 7.

If style is your modus operandi, this leather case by Mujjo should fit your tastes nicely. In terms of its looks, it’s reminiscent of Apple’s own leather case, but it’s going for the much cheaper rate of about $38 (around £28, AU$47).

It likely won’t be the most protective case, given that it doesn’t look to hug the camera unit closely, so it’s probably not the wisest choice for those who like to take their phone out in the elements. That said, if you biff, you’ll really be going down in style.

This is another choice you can buy directly in the Apple Store when you grab your iPhone 8, but we really like the leather version of Apple's official case.

Apart from the material it's made of, the design is very similar to the silicone version up above and it comes in a great variety of colors too including pink, brown and bright red.

Mous offers lots of materials for its cases, including wood, but our favorite is the Aramid Carbon Fibre option. It has what Mous calls its Airoshock technology, which uses thousands of micro air pockets to help protect your phone when you drop it.

It won't protect the front of your phone, but it comes with a free screen protector for that so you can make sure you don't scratch up your iPhone 8's display.

If protecting your phone is your number one priority when investing in a case, LifeProof’s signature offering looks to fit the bill with its colorful suite of cases.

By hugging around the back and securely over the iPhone 8’s front, it protects its fragile glass build materials on every front.

While the phone looks as much like an iPhone 6 as it does an 8 while covered, at least you’ll still be able to take advantage of all the new features, like wireless charging and the improved camera. The big downside is that this ruggedized case is nearly $100.

This case from Greenwich is a folio and will protect the screen of your phone when it's closed. It sits comfortably in the hand and won't look bulky in your pocket either.

The leather used feels premium, but you need to bear in mind this is an expensive option.
