The Razer Phone is skipping Android Oreo 8.0, going straight to 8.1

The Razer Phone was launched in November of last year and came with Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board, which made sense as Android 8.0 Oreo was very new at the time. Now, Razer has confirmed its plans for updating its flagship phone with the latest flavor of Google's mobile OS.

In fact the phone is skipping the 8.0 release and jumping straight to 8.1, Razer has confirmed on Twitter. Razer Phone owners should find the update rolling out to their phones at some point in the middle of April, if everything goes to plan.

Razer has also made a developer preview of the software available for download here, should you want to manually flash the Oreo 8.1 update to your handset and help Razer squash some bugs along the way. Unless you're particularly keen to enjoy the goodness of Oreo, you're probably better off waiting a few weeks.

What's on the way?

With Google's apps updated separately from Android itself, there isn't a huge list of new features you can make use of in Oreo, but better notification management (including snoozing for alerts) and support for picture-in-picture modes are included.

As we said in our review, the Razer Phone has a lot going for it, particularly if you're using your mobile for gaming or for watching movies. It was a bold move for the gaming brand to launch a smartphone of its own, but it's managed to pull something out of the hat to compete with the big boys.

And what of the Razer Phone 2? The rumors are that Razer is indeed planning a follow-up to its 2017 launch, with a processor upgrade perhaps the biggest bump in terms of specs (the well-equipped Razer Phone 1 already has a huge 8GB of RAM).

Leak reveals a few more specs about the Moto Z3 Play

All eyes might be on the imminent launch of the Moto G6 phone at the moment, but Lenovo has several other handsets planned for 2018, including the Moto Z3 Play. Thanks to a new filing at the Federal Communications Commission, we now know a little bit more about what's in store.

Inside the device you're going to find a Snapdragon 636 CPU, and that'll be coupled with 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of storage. Everything will run from a 3,000mAh battery which should give you plenty of time between charges.

The phone will have a 6.1-inch screen and the dimensions will match the chassis size of the current Moto Z range – which of course means you'll still be able to use your existing Moto Mods with it. Even if you upgrade your Lenovo-made smartphone this year, your modular accessories can come with you.

What's in store

All of which makes it sound like this is another solid mid-ranger to look forward to, something the Moto series has focused on in recent years. Considering the upcoming Moto G6 phones are going to target the same part of the market, it's perhaps no surprise that the Moto X5 is getting cut from the line-up.

We haven't heard much about the Moto Z3 Play or indeed the higher-end Moto Z3 so far, but we're probably looking at an edge-to-edge screen and a Snapdragon 845 for the top-of-the-line model. Face recognition might also feature heavily.

The Moto G6 line is going to be the first to break cover in 2018 but after that we can look forward to finding out what Lenovo has got in store with its Moto Z3 phones. If you're looking to get some decent-quality Android hardware at a reasonable price, they could well be worth waiting for.

ZTE Tempo Go is the cheapest Android Oreo phone yet

Looking to get your hands on the stock Android experience without breaking the bank? The ZTE Tempo Go is making its debut in the US today with an ultra-low price of $80.

This budget phone runs Android Oreo Go Edition, meaning that the all of the security measures and features of full-fat Oreo are here, but it all runs lighter to work on phones with a lower-spec, like the ZTE Tempo Go.

Drilling into the specs, it is powered by a Snapdragon 210 chipset and 1GB of RAM, and the five-inch display pushes a 854 x 480 resolution. Yeah, it’s not impressive, but that’s not the point. The point is to bring a high-quality software experience to those who don’t prefer – or can’t afford – to spend hundreds on a phone.

Just the essentials

Even with its budget specs, you’ll find a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a microSD slot to greatly extend its paltry 8GB of built-in storage. We’re also smitten that this device appears to work on all US carriers.

We’ll be reviewing this affordable phone soon to see if Google’s Android Go promise to bring stock Android to the masses pans out, so stay tuned.

Following Huawei P20 launch, a foldable phone could be coming soon

The new Huawei P20 with three rear camera shows that the Chinese phone maker is able to push the technology envelope, and so does its latest patent.

It shows what's obviously a foldable smartphone in diagram form, according to the new Huawei patent filing discovered today by Dutch publication LetsGoDigital.

The idea behind a futuristic-looking, bendable phone is to give users a tablet-sized display (ideal during long commutes), but let you fold it up into a smartphone-sized form factor (to slip into a pocket).

There's no telling if Huawei will be able to pull off a foldable phone design in time for the sequels to the Huawei Mate 10 Pro or P20 and P20 Pro next year. However, it has indicated that it's very keen to beat Samsung and Apple to a bendable phone.

Getting rid of that gap

What's holding back Huawei –  the world's No. 3 phone manufacturer behind Apple and Samsung of phones – from launching the world's first truly foldable phone?

It doesn't want to a with a gap in the middle of two screens, according to comments from Huawei CEO Richard Yu. That's exactly the design of the ZTE Axon M.

Huawei wants to avoid this foldable phone flaw

Huawei's new patent seems to solve that problem with a bendable display, but that's merely on paper. There are no signs of Huawei foldable prototype hardware yet.

The other issue may be the durability of such technology. We were recently told that the science behind such a display isn't there to endure so many folds.

Samsung, Lenovo, Sony, LG, Apple and now Huawei all appear to be sketching out plans for a truly foldable phone. It's only a matter of time for one of them to claim that coveted world's first title.

iOS 12 release date, news and rumors

The iOS 12 release date is the next big update for your iPhone and iPad now that everyone has iOS 11.3, likely the last update with a lot of front-facing features.

We're expecting iOS 12 to debut June 4 at WWDC 2018. That shouldn't surprise you by now – Apple launches its big iOS update at the same time every year.

Its new software features, however, are always filled with some unexpected and exciting news. We fully expect groundbreaking ideas, but also a healthy dose iOS 11 fixes given our many, many ongoing iOS 11 problems.

With the launch of iPhone X last year, the theoretical iPhone X2 release date happening later in 2018 and, in between, the Pencil-compatible new iPad 2018 launching into more hands, Apple seems poised to make more big changes.

Here's our list of what we expect from iOS 12, given leaks and rumors about the next big mobile operating system update for the iPhone and iPad.

Cut to the chase

  • What is iOS 12? Apple's next big iPhone and iPad software update
  • When is the iOS 12 release date? Announcement on June 4 with a subsequent beta,  September launch
  • How much will iOS 12 cost? Nothing. iOS 12 will remain free.

iOS 12 release date

The iOS 12 release date is June 4, 2018. At least, that's when we first expect to see the changes Apple is making to its mobile software during its WWDC 2018 keynote.

That's about two months away. Apple typically announces its new iOS update during this developers conference and issues the first developer beta within the next week. It also issues a public beta, previously also launched in June, for every non-developer willing to test it out.

Apple needs these betas more than ever for iOS 12, as it's been plagued with so many iOS 11 problems. The company is likely to continue with the same beta rollout schedule since it values this feedback from so many users.

The actual iOS 12 release date for everyone else is expected to be in September, right as the iPhone 9 and maybe the iPhone X2 launch. We don't yet know the names of Apple's next phones, but rumors point to a cheaper version of the iPhone X with an LCD screen and an iterative update by the way of the X2.

iOS 12 to focus on reliability over big changes

"iOS 12 just works," may be Apple's big message about its next iPhone update, as it's reportedly focusing on reliability and shelving many exciting features.

There have been so many glitches and bugs with the current mobile operating system that the team said to be working on the software allegedly got a directive to drop refreshes to the Camera, Mail, and Photos app to work on stabilization. We may also miss out on a planned home screen redesigned.

This is both good and bad news if you were looking forward to iOS 12. There may be fewer front-facing features, but your iPhone may reset less. It's hard to argue with that.

iOS 12 apps and macOS together at last

One of the biggest new iOS 12 features may actually be for you computer: Apple may bring first and third-party iOS apps to your Mac computer. Why can't you control your smart home with the Home app via that all-powerful iMac Pro? It's a ridiculous notion.

Apple is rumored to be allowing developers to expand their app ecosystem to the forthcoming macOS 10.14 update. Apple's own apps, like Home, are also said to be finally making the jump, according to Bloomberg.

More Animojis in more places (like iPad)

Whether you demanded it or vehemently opposed it, Apple is due to bring more Animojis to iOS 12 for use with the iPhone X Face ID camera. The navigation of these character masks should get easier too, according to Bloomberg.

Apple's Animoji character may make two jumps. First, the natural jump to FaceTime for video chats behind a virtual panda, robot and poop mask. Second to what may be a new iPad Pro 2018 with a Face ID camera. We've seen some evidence of an updated iPad recently, so that makes sense.

Here are more features we wish were coming to iOS 12...

What we want to see

While nothing is known about iOS 12 yet we have a clear idea of some of the things we want to see, such as the following.

1. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles that work properly

Control Center has been improved for iOS 11, but one thing we’re not such fans of is the fact that you can’t actually turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth from it.

Tap either toggle and your device will disconnect from Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth accessories, but won’t actually turn off their radios.

There are good reasons for this, as it ensures accessories like the Apple Pencil and Apple Watch 3 will continue to work, as well as features such as AirDrop and AirPlay, but there are also plenty of reasons you might want to fully disable them.

Currently to do that you have to head to the main Settings screen, so in iOS 12 we’d like there to at least be an option to have proper ‘off’ toggles in Control Center - perhaps with a harder 3D Touch?

2. Wish list returned to the App Store

The App Store has been overhauled as part of iOS 11, and for the most part it’s for the better, but one feature has been killed off in the process, namely wish lists.

Previously, if you saw an app or game you liked the look of but didn’t want to buy it then and there (perhaps because the price was high or you were using cellular data) you could add it to your wish list so you wouldn’t forget about it.

You can’t do that anymore, and nor can you see your old wish list, so good luck remembering anything you’ve added. It was a handy feature and we’d like to see it – along with everything we added to it – returned in iOS 12.

3. Camera controls in the camera app

People often talk about how intuitive iOS is, and for the most part they’re right, but there are some aspects which really aren’t - namely the camera controls, or rather their location.

If you’ve not used iOS before you’d expect to find them in the camera app, but some, including video resolution, file formats and whether or not to show a grid, are instead on a sub menu of the main Settings screen, meaning you have to actually leave the camera app and make several additional taps to change them.

It also means that some users may not even know they exist, especially since some controls are housed in the app, so you might reasonably assume that they all are. We really want to see this changed for iOS 12.

4. A movable back button

When moving around apps in iOS you’ll often want to go back to a previous screen, and as there’s no hardware back button you instead have to tap a tiny option in the top left corner of the display.

This isn’t ideal if you’re right handed, as it can be a bit of a stretch when using a larger device such as an iPhone 8 Plus, so we’d like to see its position become customizable in iOS 12.

5. More powerful Files

Files promised to be a file explorer and manager for iOS, bringing it closer to a desktop experience, or at least to Android levels of control. But in reality, the first time you open Files you probably won’t see much of anything.

You can connect cloud drives to it, but anything locally stored won’t be visible unless you manually save it to Files. It makes the app a bit confusing and clunky and means you never have a true view of your system’s files and folders.

For iOS 12 we’d like to see it turned into a proper file manager.

6. More Control Center customization

With iOS 11 Apple has let you pick what you see in Control Center, but its selection isn’t comprehensive.

We’d love the power to add any setting or app shortcut we want, and also to remove the likes of music controls and screen mirroring, which currently you can’t.

7. System-wide autofill

Password managers are a fast, secure way to log into your various apps and accounts. Or, they’re secure anyway, and on most devices they’re fast, but not always on iOS.

That’s because for a password manager to autofill the login fields of an app, the app’s developer has to have manually enabled it, which few have.

Apple has somewhat improved things by adding a ‘Password Autofill For Apps’ feature to iOS 11, which does exactly what the name suggests, but only for passwords you’ve stored with Apple.

Apps still can’t tap into your favorite password manager automatically, so the first time you log in to them you’ll have to either type out your username and password manually or copy and paste.

On a computer or Android phone the password manager experience is seamless. On iOS it’s anything but, so we want this fixed for iOS 12.

12 best power banks 2018: the best portable chargers to keep your gadgets going

Do you find your phone battery often dies before the end of the day? If so, you should buy a portable charger so you can keep it pumped up with battery while on the go.

We've put together a selection of great portable power banks that you can get right now. We've got options no matter what you're looking for.

Whether you’re looking for a high capacity battery, slim design, lots of ports or something that can charge up both your phone and your laptop at the same time, we’ve got you covered.

Best power banks for capacity

You've likely heard of Anker, and this is one of the company's best portable chargers. It comes with a huge 20,100mAh battery inside, meaning this will be able to charge up your phone or tablet multiple times before it needs a recharge.

It also comes with high-speed charging for your devices if they use PowerIQ or VoltageBoost. It won't be able to use Qualcomm's QuickCharge technology, but it'll still boost your device when you're on the go.

If the Anker isn't right for you, our next choice is the Aukey 20,000mAh battery pack. It features two ports so you can charge both your phone and your tablet at the same time and also has a light to show you how much battery charge is leftover.

The blocky design may not be for everyone, but this portable charger should be able to charge your phone and other gadgets a few times over with such a high capacity cell inside.

If you're looking for an even larger capacity charger than the option above you may want to go for the iMuto Ultra High Capacity portable charger. It offers a 30,000mAh capacity that will be able to charge your average smartphone over six times and still have some charger left.

It can also charge some MacBooks and laptops too, but you may want to make sure it will be compatible with your computing option before you buy it. Considering the price though, you'll struggle to find a 30,000mAh charger for this little.

Another high capacity portable charger here for you and this time it's from RAVPower with a 22,000mAh option. The design is similar to the Anker and Aukey made options above, and while it doesn't include as much capacity as the iMuto one it does have a much slimmer design.

You have three ports here so you can charge multiple gadgets at the same time and it'll have enough capacity to be able to charge both a mobile and an iPad or tablet from 0% too.

Best slim power banks

Xiaomi has a hand in some unexpected sectors of technology, including audio and portable chargers. But don't sleep on either, as it's onto something worth checking out.

During our testing, its 10,000mAh Power Bank provided good results, both in terms of its portability and charging potential. While not the fastest charger out there, it was able to charge our Google Pixel 2 in a little over two hours. Thankfully, it's discreet enough that you can bring it with you just about everywhere to plug in when necessary.

It's not rare for a power bank to come with a charging cable, but we appreciate that this one has been built with care to suit both micro USB and USB-C users with the same cable, as seen in the above gallery.

Poweradd also offers a great slim portable charger, and it's one of the cheapest options on this list yet boasts a substantial 10,000mAh cell inside.

It may be quite heavy, but this is only 1.3cm thick, making it a great device to slip into your back pocket when you're out and about. You'll want to grab a cable to go with it though as unlike the Iceworks choice above it doesn't come with one built in.

The Anker PowerCore II 10,000 power bank is perhaps the most portable option on this list and allows you to have at least two full charges for your phone in your back pocket ready to go.

At only 209g and 1.5cm thick, you'll be able to take this around with you and not feel weighed down while still having 10,000mAh of extra power for any of your devices. Plus it comes with Anker's own fast-charging tech that should mean you won't be plugged into it for too long.

Like a lot of the chargers on this list, it doesn't come with a cable attached so you'll need to take your own out and about with you.

This is the cheapest option for a portable charger we have on the list, but this option from RAVPower should suit you for recharging your mobile phone while on the go.

It has a capacity of 6,700mAh, which should recharge your average smartphone at least once and maybe even twice. There are three color options here with the choices of either pink, bright blue or silver.

The LEDs on the side of the device also show you how much charge is left and there's fast-charging tech built-in too.

Best power banks with lots of ports

This may not be the most portable charger on our list, but it features a lot of ports, so you can charge multiple devices at the same time. It'll even charge laptops as well as your phone and tablet.

You can charge six devices at once, and with a 50,000mAh capacity it has the juice to do that, so if you're usually surrounded by a lot of tech this is possibly one of the best chargers to buy.

Looking for a another option with lots of ports on it? This may be a good choice for you, as there are four ports and you can charge up your MacBook as well as USB devices such as your phone.

There's a quick charge port too, which will fast charge compatible devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Best power banks for both laptops and phones

RAVPower's portable charger is a great choice if you need a device that can charge both your laptop and your phone. It features USB-C and normal USB outputs as well as an AC output, so you can plug your laptop charger directly in.

There's also a 20,100mAh capacity battery inside, so this will be able to juice up your phone or tablet multiple times before you need to put it back on charge.

The picture above may be deceptive, as this isn't a small charger and is capable of charging up your laptop or tablet as well as your phone simultaneously.

You can charge up to three devices at the same time and it comes with a 23,000mAh capacity, so it should last long enough between recharges.

iOS 11.3 launches battery health, new Animoji and more advanced AR

Apple launched iOS 11.3 today, marking the biggest update for the iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. It's also just in time for the new iPad 2018 release date on March 30.

The new software brings about several important features, chief among them the new battery health menu. It measures the maximum capacity of your battery. Our nearly five-month-old iPhone X now display 99%, meaning it can charge up to 99%.

This new submenu in battery settings menu comes after it was discovered that Apple was slowing down the performance of older devices. The company's explanation was that it did this in order to maintain battery life and reduce impromptu shut offs. The reason was good – the lack of a public explanation that it was doing this was poor.

Better AR with iOS 11.3

We got to experience new AR features with iOS 11.3 when testing out the new iPad 2018 this week. This is thanks to ARKit 1.5.

With iOS 11.3, new AR apps like Boulevard AR can more accurately map to vertical surfaces like walls and doors, horizontal surfaces like tables and chairs and, importantly, irregular shaped surfaces like circular tables.

All of this is an important development, as Apple is extremely bullish on augmented reality apps, especially for classrooms.

Four new Anomoji

There are four new Anomji ready to populate and animate your iPhone X Messages app. You'll find a lion, bear, dragon and skull when you download iOS 11.3. We're now up to 16 Animoji masks.

Like the previous 12 Animoji characters, Apple is able to animate these masks using 50 different facial muscles movements. It's all captured by the TrueDepth camera and A11 Bonic chipset, a pairing that's exclusive to the iPhone X.

Other iOS 11.3 features

The release notes for iOS 11.3 don't stop there. Apple is debuting Business Chat in Messages to let you communicate directly with businesses in the retail, finance and hospitality field.

Health records are here to help patients of more than 40 health systems view their medical records from multiple institutions. Apple wisely encrypts this data and puts it behind a passcode.

Apple's updated Data & Privacy menu a part of iOS 11.3, just in time for the company to look more on top of it than Facebook when it comes to your privacy protection.

Apple Music now has music videos with iOS 11.3, and Apple is highlighting the fact that you can watch them ad-free.

This is likely the significant iOS 11 update with front-facing features before Apple launches the iOS 12 beta at its WWDC 2018 keynote on June 4. It's reportedly out to solve a lot of those pesky iOS 11 problems.

New Moto G6 leak shows off a flagship-quality design

A steady stream of leaks has more or less confirmed that the Moto G6 is coming sooner rather than later, but now we’ve seen it from just about every angle.

A new batch of photos has leaked purporting to show the sixth generation of Motorola’s affordable phone, and it looks more dapper than ever. It’s getting seriously hard to tell so-called budget phones from mid-range contenders and flagships these days.

Taking a tour around the photos we can see a front-facing fingerprint sensor, which is a design staple of Moto phones – although it’s a bit slimmer than before, as the company looks to be squeezing its full name onto the front of the phone, according to leaked images from a site called Killer Features.

Looking through previous leaks of the G6, we’re seeing conflicting claims as to where the sensor will be located. Some photos show it on the back, while others don’t show one at all. The leaks that surface closer to a phone’s release are usually more accurate, but we won’t know for sure until the phone's release, which is rumored for April or May.

All in the family

The Moto G6 looks to be taking a hearty scoop of influence from the Moto X4, which possesses much of the design flourishes we’re seeing here. There’s curved glass, and a dual rear-facing camera system, and overall its just appears to be a huge step up in build quality from previous iterations of the budget phone.

Where the G6 looks to strike out on its own is with its 18:9 aspect ratio, with the phone sporting a screen that’s taller than those from the last generation. Another feature that could make this phone a must-buy is the likely inclusion of Android Oreo software, which has yet to appear on the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus, despite Moto’s September 2017 commitment to delivering the big update.
