The best iPhone X cases

With a starting price of $999 / £999 / AU$1,579 the iPhone X is a phone you’ll want to keep protected more than any other, especially with the glass back and lack of bezels potentially making it more susceptible to damage than previous models.

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of ways to keep it safe, with dozens if not hundreds of cases already available, suiting just about every budget, style and need.

Below, you’ll find several recommendations that cover a wide range of budgets and style preferences. While some of these options are untested, they are each a cut above the rest due to their value and design, and are backed by positive consumer feedback.

Note: we've ranked these from cheapest to most expensive according to prices at time of writing.

Olixar Ultra-Thin Gel Case

This is one of the cheapest iPhone X cases on the market right now and it should protect your phone from the odd scratch.

We don't think it'll be able to do much to protect your device if you drop it though and the gel material probably won't feel as comfortable on your palms as the glass that's on the back of the iPhone X.

TOZO Ultra Thin Hard Case

TOZO claims this is the world’s thinnest hard-shell case for the iPhone X and while we can’t be sure whether that’s true or not, it’s certainly very slim at just 0.35mm thick.

That makes it a great choice if you don’t want to add any bulk to your fancy new phone, especially given the low price of this case, which should make it all the more appealing if your bank balance is hurting after buying the iPhone X itself.

However, while it will offer some protection against scrapes, we’re not confident that a case this thin will do much to protect your phone from drops.

JETech Protective Case with Kickstand

With the JETech Protective Case you’re getting a lot of case for not very much money at all. It’s a black TPU case – so far so basic, but it has a carbon fiber design, giving it a bit of flair, and a textured frame for extra grip.

This JETech case also has a built-in metal kickstand, so you can prop your iPhone X up for hands-free viewing, while air cushion technology gives you more drop defense than you might expect.

Ultimately it’s a fairly plain case, and you can get more protection elsewhere, but it looks to strike a good balance between features and price.

Spigen Ultra Hybrid Case

Sometimes the simplest option is the best option, and the Spigen Ultra Hybrid iPhone X case is certainly simple.

It’s available in a range of colors, but they all include a transparent back, so you can see your iPhone X in full while keeping it protected.

It’s just a simple polycarbonate hard case, but it’s slim, has pronounced button covers so the buttons are easy to find and press, large cut-outs that can fit most cables, and it’s made from a non-slip material, so you’re less likely to drop your phone.

If you do still drop it though the case sports air cushioned corners, which should help keep your iPhone X in one piece.

ESR Marble Pattern Cover

Most of the options we’ve covered so far have been fairly plain, but the ESR Marble Pattern cover really stands out, with a marble design in black, blue, grey or white.

Beneath the surface it’s a thin and light TPU case, and there’s nothing clever going on here, so you’re only getting basic protection, but it includes a smooth, anti-scratch and anti-fingerprint finish, raised lips to protect the screen and camera, and a low price tag.

Spigen Neo Hybrid

The Spigen Neo Hybrid case offers a combination of hard and soft protection to keep you iPhone X safe from nicks and falls. And, it does all that with a slick design, combining grippy PU plastic with a herringbone pattern and hard PC with a metallic paint job. It offers design and protection both at an affordable price.

Totallee Thin iPhone X Case

This one may be one of the best looking cases we've seen for the iPhone X so far and the super thin design means the case shouldn't make your phone much bulgier in your pocket.

It's uncertain how protective that vertical camera cut-out will be, but here you'll get the choice of a variety of colors including a bold blue and green. Those aren't colors you can buy the new iPhone X in.

Tech21 Evo Tactical

Unlike the choice above, the Tech21 Evo Tactical won't protect the screen of your iPhone X, but you can always buy a screen protector to ensure you don't scratch up that 5.8-inch bezel-less display.

The design of this case should help protect it from drops too, plus you can also use wireless charging without having to peel the case off your phone.

X-Doria Defense Lux iPhone X Case

Combining style and protection, the X-Doria Defense Lux case has an anodized aluminum frame with built-in air pockets to absorb shock.

In fact, the case exceeds military drop test standards, so it should keep your iPhone X safer than most, but it also looks good, not just thanks to the aforementioned metal frame, but also because of the back, which comes in a choice of ballistic nylon, black leather, carbon fiber or wood.

That’s an interesting selection of materials, each of which will give the X-Doria Defense Lux case a quite different appearance to most other iPhone X covers.

Incipio Esquire Slim case

We get it, you don't want to use a case. But if you're tossing the idea around, you might want to try the Esquire Slim case, which is one of the most low-profile options we've found so far.

The fabric yields a very soft, cotton-like feel and slides into the pocket easily. It covers each of the iPhone X's corners, but leaves the buttons exposed for ease of use. Despite its high-quality design, this one comes surprisingly cheap.

Urban Armor Gear Feather-Light Rugged Case

You might understandably want to put protection first when buying an iPhone X case, and if so the Urban Armor Gear Feather-Light Rugged Case should make for a good option.

It combines a hard outer shell with a soft, impact-resistant core, plus skid pads on the back, which add up to a case that can meet military drop test standards.

It also sports a visually striking – albeit rather rugged – design, and as the name suggests it’s surprisingly light, thanks to a honeycomb structure which also aids its drop protection.

Wireless charging and contactless payments also work through the case, so you’re not losing any functionality.

Incase Facet case

This case features a design that strikes a nice balance between a soft, silicon case and a hard case.

Unlike other cases, this one doesn't have button cutouts or pronounced areas, but they are noted for easy navigation. This results in a low-profile option that has a slick ripple design on its back and a felt material on the inside to prevent scratches.

Available in several colors, this one could be good for those who are looking for a rubbery-feeling case that isn't too loud visually.

Moshi StealthCover for iPhone X

This case is slim once again, but it's made of metal and has a magnetic clasp on the side to ensure your phone screen won't easily get scratched up.

It also has a military-grade drop protection certificate, so you can be certain this case will protect your iPhone X the time you inevitably drop it.

OtterBox Statement Series Case for iPhone X

The OtterBox Statement Series Case at once wants to show your phone off and show itself off, as you can tell from the back, which is mostly transparent but has a large section of colored leather at the bottom.

This gives the case a far more distinctive, high-end look than your average transparent case, and being from OtterBox you can trust that it’s well-built. In fact, it’s passed over 24 tests lasting more than 238 hours to ensure it offers maximum protection.

iPhone X Leather Folio Case

This official Apple case is perhaps unsurprisingly one of the most expensive, but it goes some way to justifying the price tag, as it’s crafted from French leather, and unlike the Ullu case above it covers the front of the phone as well as the back, with a wallet-like design.

That means you get more protection and Apple’s also made use of the flap on the front by adding a couple of slots, which you can use to hold cash and cards.

The case will also wake your iPhone X up when you open it, and put it to sleep when closed, and it doesn’t prevent the phone from being wirelessly charged.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus get even better, and even more expensive

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus have been humming along at 64GB of internal storage in the US since launch, but today Samsung revealed it's finally giving both phones a much-needed storage boost here.

The smartphones will be available in 128GB and 256GB storage options starting with pre-orders tomorrow, May 1. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus with more storage officially go on sale in the US on May 18 via Samsung.com.

Plus, the new Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will continue to support external microSD cards with up to 400GB of capacity, giving you even more memory to work with.

As for price, you will be paying more for that added storage. The 128GB Galaxy S9 retails for $769.99, and the 128GB Galaxy S9 Plus retails for $889.99.

The 256GB Galaxy S9 is on the shelf for $819.99, and the 256GB Galaxy S9 Plus can be yours for $939.99.

You can choose either phone in either storage option in one of three colors: Lilac Purpople, Coral Blue and Midnight Black.

T-Mobile and Sprint merger: here’s what it means

T-Mobile and Sprint have announced that they intend to merge into a unified carrier simply called T-Mobile. This will put the conjoined company in number three position in terms of subscribers behind Verizon and AT&T.

By joining forces, T-Mobile now comprises of both company’s subscribers, as well as those who use MetroPCS, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile.

T-Mobile claims that it will be able to provide “lower prices, better quality, unmatched value, and greater competition” to US customers. How exactly it intends to do that hasn’t yet been disclosed – probably because the companies haven’t actually merged yet. The merger is expected to transpire no later than the first half of 2019.

T-Mobile’s first mission is to be the first to deploy a blanket of 5G coverage over the US. In addition to the boon that 5G claims to be in terms of connectivity quality and speed, it claims that accomplishing such a lofty goal will bring as much as three million new jobs in the US by 2024.

If you’re a T-Mobile or Sprint subscriber, there’s nothing you need to worry about for now. But it’s possible that things might change at some point next year – hopefully, for the better.

Double down on data with Tesco Mobile deals in May

Tesco Mobile has jumped into spring with some fresh phone deals that it wants to offer smartphone users who like their data.

The plan is to keep you megabyte munchers brimming over with data by doubling the amount that’s on offer for certain plans and particular phones. Specifically, Tesco Mobile is offering double data on certain Apple iPhones and Huawei handsets. That means there are options for fans of both iOS and Android alike.

Deals start at £15.99 with 2GB of data and stretch right up to £25 per month for a whopping 20GB of data SIM only. From iPhone 6 and 7 to Huawei P-Smart and SIMO, here are some of the best data deals right now from Tesco Mobile.

Every little helps

Tesco Mobile, running with O2, has been named a Which? Recommended provider for the eighth year running with over five million customers across the UK.

The supermarket-turn-mobile provider offers Anytime Upgrade Flex contracts which allow users to change their deal both up and down on a monthly basis. These are also capped, meaning users won’t get bill shocks as they always know their top limit.

The Family Perks offering from Tesco Mobile allows families to pay just one bill. This gets them monthly perks like extra minutes, Clubcard points, data increases and money off future mobile bills.

HTC U12 Plus camera samples hint at its photographic prowess

The HTC U12 Plus (or just HTC U12) is probably going to be announced soon, so it’s not surprising that photos seemingly taken on the phone have leaked, but they do reveal a little more about the camera.

The shots, obtained by MobielKopen, aren’t all that remarkable in themselves, though they seem fairly detailed, but the EXIF data from the images reveals that they were taken with f/2.6 and f/1.8 apertures.

What’s not clear is whether those apertures come from two different lenses or a variable aperture lens, as seen on the Samsung Galaxy S9.

Two lenses is more likely, especially as other leaks point to the HTC U12 Plus having a dual-lens camera, but we’d previously heard that there would be one 12MP lens and one 16MP lens, while these images all have a 12.2MP resolution.

Multiple cameras with multiple apertures

So it’s possible that the HTC U12 Plus has a variable aperture 12MP camera, used to take these photos, as well as a second lens, which would put it more in line with the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. But for now we can’t be sure.

The photos don’t reveal anything else, but we have previously heard that the HTC U12 Plus might also have a dual-lens front-facing camera, so its photographic capabilities could be one way in which HTC aims for the phone to stand out.

We should know soon, as current rumors point to an announcement sometime in May.

T-Mobile and Sprint merger promises 5G progress in the US

American mobile giants T-Mobile and Sprint have agreed to merge in a move which the two parties claim will improve services for customers and ensure the US maintains its leadership into the 5G era.

T-Mobile will be the senior partner in the merger, effectively purchasing its rival for $26 billion, and its CEO John Legere will head up the new combined company.

If approved, the transaction would combine the third and fourth largest operators in the US. It is likely this will attract the attention of regulators, but both companies have launched a charm offensive to claim why this will be a good thing for the market.

T-Mobile and Sprint

It claims the economies of scale will allow it to be more aggressive in the market, lowering prices and encouraging competition. Indeed, there is a pledge to invest $40 billion during the first three years after the merger.

Central to this claim is that neither Sprint nor T-Mobile has the means to build a truly national 5G network on their own, but their combined spectrum and network assets mean they will be able to this more rapidly than rivals AT&T and Verizon – both of whom have more customers and spectrum than the merged company.

This is because T-Mobile has long range 600MHz airwaves, whereas its rivals have mmWave spectrum which offers vast capacity but only within a limited radius. The two companies also assert that Verizon and AT&T would have to “kick” customers off LTE to facilitate the rollout.

“This combination will create a fierce competitor with the network scale to deliver more for consumers and businesses in the form of lower prices, more innovation, and a second-to-none network experience – and do it all so much faster than either company could on its own,” said Legere. “As industry lines blur and we enter the 5G era, consumers and businesses need a company with the disruptive culture and capabilities to force positive change on their behalf.”

This nationwide 5G would not only bring benefits to customers, who would get 15 times faster speeds by 2024, but also boost the entire US mobile industry, which has enjoyed significant advantages from leading the world in 4G such as job creation.

It is unclear how receptive regulators will be to the proposals, but both parties will hope the promise of investment and increased competition will see it passed. Another claim is that half of Americans can only get high speed broadband from one provider, whereas 5G will enable fixed-wireless access (FWA) services across the USA.

“We intend to bring this same competitive disruption as we look to build the world’s best 5G network that will make the US a hotbed for innovation and will redefine the way consumers live and work across the US, including in rural America,” declared Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, who will join the board of the new firm.

“As we do this, we will force our competitors to follow suit, as they always do, which will benefit the entire country. I am confident this combination will spur job creation and ensure opportunities for Sprint employees as part of a larger, stronger combined organization, and I am thrilled that Kansas City will be a second headquarters for the merged company.”

Xiaomi increases the prices of Redmi Note 5 Pro, Mi TV 4

Xiaomi has announced a hike in the prices of its popular products, the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Mi TV 4 to keep up with the increased costs and the huge demand. Now, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is costlier by Rs 1,000 while the Mi TV 4 55-inch is dearer by Rs 5,000.

According to Xiaomi, the increase in prices is due to multiple factors ranging from huge demand to a new tax structure that imposes a 10 percent tax on PCBA imports. Xiaomi says that it can ramp up local PCBA production by 100 percent only by Q3 2018, and as such, it has to import a “significant number” of PCBAs.

Further, the depreciation of the INR by nearly 5 percent since the beginning of this year has also affected Xiaomi’s costs. These three factors together would have increased Xiaomi’s working costs and to make up for them, the company has announced a hike in prices of two of its popular products.

New prices applicable from May 1st

Xiaomi has announced that the new increased prices will be applicable from May 1st on Mi.com, Mi Home stores and Flipkart.

After the price hike, the Redmi Note 5 Pro 4GB variant will cost Rs 14,999, while the 6GB variant will continue to be available at Rs 16,999. The Mi TV 4 55-inch 4K HDR will now cost Rs 44,999, up from its original price of Rs 39,999.

Prices could come down later

While Xiaomi has not commented on whether the prices of the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Mi TV 4 could come down in the future, the company has revealed that the local production of PCBAs will increase by 100 percent by Q3 2018. This could bring down Xiaomi’s PCBA imports, and there are chances that the company could pass on the benefit of reduced costs to its customers.

BlackBerry KeyTwo takes another step closer to reality

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 spotted on Chinese certification website

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 reportedly got certified by China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (CMIIT). The certification shows there are two variants of the phone, which could be the two chipsets— Exynos and Qualcomm.

As per a report on LetsGoDigital, the two variants have been certified, but there’s no additional information given. The models listed are SM-N9600 and SM-N9608.

Reports from the past

Earlier to this, the Galaxy Note 9 made its appearance on Geekbench, which detailed a Snapdragon 845 chipset that scored 2190 for single core and 8806 for multi core tests. But the model number on the Geekbench test was dissimilar to the one leaked today. That model was dubbed as SM-N960U.

It’s worth noting also that this is the Snapdragon 845 version of the Galaxy Note 9, but there will probably also be an Exynos 9810 version launched outside the US which may well be faster.

Furthermore, the Samsung flagship is also rumoured to have a 4000mAh battery, which could be a huge bump over the Galaxy Note 8.

The Galaxy Note 9 will surely continue with the S Pen supports, as it is attached to the core purpose of the Note series. It is also said to feature Bixby 2.0 (expected to be a improved Bixby).

It is said to miss the in-display fingerprint sensor. Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities - an analyst who is often right with Samsung predictions - says the company won't have in-screen fingerprint tech ready for the Note 9 because of "technical difficulties”.

Unlike the Galaxy S8, Samsung hasn’t been able to put an impact with this year’s Galaxy S9. There are some enhancements and additional features, but they do not add up to be called an incremental update. The hopes are with the Note 9, and it could be Samsung’s real flagship of the year.

Huawei could be working on its own OS as an Android alternative

Chinese mobile giants like Huawei aren't having much success getting their devices out to the masses in North America, due partly to increased scrutiny from the US government. It turns out that Huawei might have a plan B ready, just in case it gets abandoned by Google and Android as well.

The South China Morning Post reports that Huawei is working on its own mobile operating system, intended to be ready to go should the friction between the US authorities and the company get even worse.

Both Huawei and ZTE have been declared threats to national security by the US government, though as yet no solid evidence has been made public to back up the claims. As a result, the Chinese firms are finding it hard to do business with carriers and retailers in the States... and Google might conceivably be next.

Not for the foreseeable

In fact, Huawei has been working on the OS and something similar for desktops and tablets since 2012, the Post reports. As it's not yet up to the same standard as Android however, the software has remained in-house. If trade and security tensions rise further, Huawei wants a backup plan, insider sources say.

When asked for comment by the Post, Huawei said it "has no plans to release its own OS in the foreseeable future", adding: "We focus on products powered by Android OS and adopt an open attitude towards mobile OS."

Google's core services are blocked in China right now anyway, but a Huawei OS would lose access to both these services and the huge library of Android apps that have been built up over the years. Still, the company might have no other option if it gets the boot from Google other than to go it alone.

LG seems to be enjoying the build-up to the arrival of the LG G7 ThinQ, which gets its official unveiling on May 2. The latest feature to be teased by the company is the phone's previously rumored Boombox Speaker, apparently ramping up the volume by 6dB and doubling the bass output from anything that's been heard before (on an LG phone at least).

In fact LG is claiming you can crank up the volume up to ten times higher than a normal smartphone, because of the way it uses space inside the handset as a resonance chamber. Putting the phone on a solid surface amplifies the bass even further, apparently.

Another feature LG has confirmed is DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, designed to create the illusion of immersive 3D sound from your phone, as long as you've got your headphones plugged in (the 3.5mm audio jack is sticking around). LG is also including a Hi-Fi Quad DAC inside the LG G7 ThinQ to maximize audio accuracy.

Here's what we know

All of which should be good news for audio lovers, and makes us wonder exactly what LG might be holding back for the LG V35 ThinQ, scheduled to arrive later in the year – these kind of high-end extras are usually held back for the V line, so perhaps the phones will be on more of an even footing this time.

As well as an official launch date of May 2, there's lots we already know (or think we know) about the LG G7 ThinQ. It's set to come with an ultra-bright 6.1-inch screen, an optional notch you can turn off in the software, a Snapdragon 845 chipset and 4GB of RAM.

On paper at least it looks capable of taking on the big hitters from Apple, Samsung and Google but we'll have to wait to get our hands on the phone to judge how good it really is. If you often want to use your phone as a portable speaker though, LG just gave you another reason to put the LG G7 ThinQ on your shopping list.

Crank up the Boombox Speaker on the LG G7 ThinQ

There is more empty space on the G7 ThinQ than in previous LG phones and the company is putting it to good use by blasting sound. And the audio-fest does not stop there.

Instagram is testing a feature to let you mute users in your feed

Got friends who like to share just a few too many Instagram pictures of their vacations? Want to tidy up your social media feeds without hurting anyone's feelings? You could soon be able to mute specific users in your timeline without unfollowing them, based on limited tests Instagram seems to be running right now.

Instagram user @wongmjane spotted the new feature in her app, reports The Verge. It would presumably work in a similar way to the mute option on Twitter – you don't have to see posts from particular people, but you can stay connected to them.

It's not the only Instagram test to have surfaced, either: the developers behind the app also seem to be toying with the idea of throwing in a calendar view for your Instagram Stories, making it easier to look back at previous posts that are no longer available for your contacts to see.

Testing, testing

There's more. Another feature @wongmjane has come across shows a Slow-Mo button for Stories, alongside the usual options like Boomerang, Focus and Rewind. Stories are now one of the most popular parts of the Instagram app, so it makes sense that the developers would want to add even more options.

And speaking of Stories, Instagram also appears to be testing the option to post reactions to Stories, so you can tell your friends just how hilarious or depressing their most recent uploads are. The feature is already available in Facebook Stories.

Instagram has made the standard "no comment" response to these tests, but it's standard practice for apps to run small-scale experiments like this – we don't know when these features will appear for everyone, or even if they ever well, but it's interesting to see some of the ideas the Instagram team is looking at.

Essential Phone is finally available in more countries

The Essential Phone has been improving in steps since its launch, most recently with its jump to Android Oreo 8.1. Now, Essential has made the company's first phone and accessories even more accessible, with a commercial release to customers in Canada, France, Japan and the UK via the Essential.com site.

Early on, the Essential Phone had much more limited availability, with only Sprint offering it in retail locations, despite working on other GSM networks, like AT&T and T-Mobile. Since then, Amazon has begun offering an unlocked Essential Phone with Alexa.

Though the Essential Phone is trailing behind competitors that have released or debuted flagships running the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset, it still has plenty of life in it. Its design holds up, with a notch that beat Apple to the party and offers more screen real estate than other notch-equipped phone. And the Snapdragon 835 chipset inside is still a competent performer.

We're in contact with Essential regarding global pricing and we will update when we can confirm the cost in each region. Since the Essential Phone has dropped in price significantly from when it launched, it will be reasonable to expect that it will enter these new markets as a great mid-range offering with high-end credentials.

Both the devices go on sale today and can be found on the official Apple India website.

The new models of the Product Red portfolio were launched internationally starting April 13. Countries like Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, South Korea, UK and the US already have the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Red editions available to them. In fact, India among the third wave of launches.

Though not the pioneers of bring the color red to phones, they were definitely the first ones to design an entire marketing campaign around the color. After the Apple’s launch, brands like Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus followed suit.

That being said, it’s for a good cause. All the money that Apple receives from the sale of Red Edition phones goes towards Red, the global fund for HIV/AIDS grants. More specifically, Red is a company that seeks to engage private sector companies with raising funds and increasing awareness about the epidemic of  HIV/AIDs in eight African nations.

As per reports from December, Apple had raised over $160 million (Rs 1,038 crore) for help in Red’s efforts. So far they’re the largest donor for the organisation.
