2,000 Amazon Go stores? “Not even close. We are still learning.”

While it is true that a small Amazon Go store has made its debut in Seattle to serve the e-commerce giant’s employees for the meantime, “it’s absolutely not correct” to assume that Amazon has plans to raise 2,000 locations at once to serve a hungry, savvy public.

“We have no plans to open 2,000 of anything,” said spokesperson Pia Arthur to CNET. “Not even close. We are still learning.”

Arthur also denied that the unstaffed supermarket concept has been blueprinted in a more traditional and larger 30,000 to 40,000 square foot form factor.

Business Insider and The Wall Street Journal have previous cited unattributed sources in their reporting about Amazon’s supposedly grandiose plans to wipe away low-level jobs with its automated inventory tracking and checkout-free consumer experience. The only Amazon Go location will be open to the public in early 2017 and will join the company’s three physical bookstores.

Amazon’s retail footprint won’t be ballooning in a snap, but the potential is ripe for it to do so.
