One of the very few weak points of the Samsung Galaxy S7 is its speakers, which while not awful, also aren’t great. But it seems Samsung could address that with the Samsung Galaxy S8, by giving the phone dual speakers with stereo sound.
The S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge only have a single speaker, so that could be a significant upgrade, and one which would make sense when rivals like the iPhone 7 and HTC 10 offer dual speakers.
The news comes from sources speaking to FoneArena, who add that these speaker improvements could be powered by technology from Harman, which Samsung recently acquired.
More than just a name
It would be logical for Samsung to take advantage of the Harman name, but whether the Galaxy S8’s speakers will genuinely have a lot of work put in to them or basically just have Harman branding attached remains to be seen.
As does the position of the speakers, since the source doesn’t say whether they’ll be front-facing, bottom-firing or on the top and bottom edges – which are the three most likely options and can all impact the sound in different ways.
But we should see soon, as the S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge are likely to launch just before MWC 2017 in late February. Other rumors point to a large 4K screen, a massive battery, a dual-lens camera and 6GB of RAM, so with or without stereo sound the S8 should be worth the wait.
- You'll still get superior sound through headphones, and these are the best
