Unlocked HTC One M9 starts seeing Nougat today, carrier models following next year

While Samsung is busy beta testing the heck out of Galaxy S7’s prospective Nougat update, as well as unofficially confirming major impending software makeovers for a number of mid-range devices, LG, Sony, Moto and HTC pretty silently duke it out for the heavyweight Android 7.0 title.

It’s a very evenly matched contest thus far, as LG works closely with US carriers to quickly spread the G5’s N love nationwide, Sony can crow about Xperia X Performance and XZ global rollout beginnings, while the Moto G4 and G4 Plus actually got the non-Nexus ball rolling more than a month back, followed on the Android Nougat bandwagon by the Z and Z Force.

Then there’s HTC, which not only launched the Sprint-exclusive Bolt and international 10 evo running OS build 7.0 out the box, also already bringing the unlocked 10 and One M9 up to date, at least stateside.

Yup, the aging, never-awfully-popular HTC One M9 follows its successor’s suit “late this evening”, scoring the brand-new platform iteration that’s still at a microscopic sub-1 percent global share. According to the Taiwanese OEM’s USA Twitter channel, “carrier variants” will only leave Marshmallow behind “early next year”, possibly not before the unlocked One A9 also receives OTA 7.0 goodies.

Remember, the HTC One M9 was originally released in spring of 2015 with Lollipop pre-installed, no doubt reaching the end of the major software support road now on Nougat.
