We may get the Samsung Galaxy S9 before the Galaxy S8 gets Android Oreo

Samsung has yet to announce a launch date for the Android Oreo update on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, and it means we may see the Galaxy S9 launch before they're even upgraded.

In a message to Galaxy S8 owners signed up to Android Oreo beta, the company said it's "doing its best to distribute the official version" of the software to the phone.

The message confirms those who sign up to the beta will get the upgrade a day early, but it doesn't reveal and exact date for a rollout to begin.

It may be that the company is struggling to get its software ready, and considering the Galaxy S9 is set to launch on February 25 at MWC 2018 it looks like Samsung may have another phone launching with Android Oreo before its older handset is updated.

It has been a long wait

Those who own a Galaxy S8 have been able to sign up to a beta testing program for the software since November 2017, but it's subject to bugs as it's still not tje final version.

The time in between the beta being announced and the launch of the software has been longer than the wait for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge to get the Android 7 Nougat based upgrade.

Samsung's beta for the Galaxy S7 upgrade to Android Nougat was announced on November 10, 2016 and the official upgrade was ready on January 19, 2017. That was a wait of 70 days.

Those with the Galaxy S8 have already been waiting 91 days (and counting) for their upgrade to the software, and the fact Samsung hasn't set a date suggests the wait will continue.

Don't expect to get the upgrade immediately either. Only some handsets will be set to get the Android 8 Oreo software on the day it launches as some networks, carriers and countries will have restrictions on when it can roll out.

To keep up with the latest on the Oreo updates for all Android phones we expect to get the software you can read our tracker here.
