AT&T has made the first move to distribute the TV channels its subsidiary DirecTV is licensing somewhere other than a TV.
DIRECTV NOW is what the service is called and is accessible to everyone, not just AT&T and DirecTV subscribers, through your tablet, smartphone or select smart TV systems.
The service offers up to more than 120 channels for a monthly fee:
- Live a Little – $35 / month (60+ channels)
- Just Right – $50 / month (80+ channels)
- Go Big – $60 / month (100+ channels)
- Gotta Have it – $70 / month (120+ channels)
HBO and Cinemax can both be had for an extra $5 per month, each. AT&T is offering the Go Big package for $35 per month for a limited time and the discounted price is effective as long as customers retain the package, barring “reasonable programming price increases applicable to all packages.”
Here are the viewing platforms available that will be accessible through either the DIRECTV NOW app or webpage:
- Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick (Fire tablets in 2017)
- Android mobile devices and tablets
- iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
- Chromecast (Android at launch; iOS in 2017)
- Google Cast (Chromecast Built-In)-enabled LeEco ecotvs and VIZIO SmartCast Displays
- Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari web browsers
- Roku TV (coming in 2017)
- Smart TVs from Samsung and other brands (coming in 2017)
AT&T is offering various periods of DIRECTV NOW for free with the purchase of new devices:
- Lenovo laptop with an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, Amazon Fire TV stick with Alexa Voice Remote: one month
- LeEco Le S3, Le Pro 3, Super4 X43 Pro ecotv, Apple TV: three months free
- LeEco Super4 X55, X65 ecotvs: six months
- LeEco uMax83 ecotv: one year
LeEco will offer the prepaid DIRECTV NOW subscriptions with the smartphones and TVs starting tomorrow.
The ad-supported and more limited version of DIRECTV NOW is called FreeVIEW. On-demand content from the AUDIENCE Network, Otter Media and other providers will be available for free through DIRECTV NOW portals under the FreeVIEW banner.
The service launches November 30.
If you have AT&T for cellular service, DIRECTV will zero-rate any data you use to view DIRECTV NOW and FreeVIEW content.
AT&T is also leveraging its partnership with the online creators at Fullscreen to make a year’s subscription to on-demand content free for its cell service users. Streaming Fullscreen content will also be zero-rated for AT&T cell subscribers.
