Samsung Pay is officially delayed in the UK once again, until sometime next year

While Samsung Pay was at one point supposed to launch on British shores in early 2016, it seems the Galaxy and Gear-compatible digital wallet platform will ultimately keep its prospective local adopters waiting until sometime next year.

Worse yet, we don’t even have a new approximate timeline, despite Apple Pay’s UK commercial debut way back in July 2015, followed by Android Pay this May. Both mobile payment services also support a number of important British banks, including HSBC, Lloyds and RBS, plus Barclays as far as Cupertino’s popular e-money app is concerned only.

It’s therefore a little surprising to hear “negotiations with banks” are precisely the reason behind Samsung Pay’s holdup, even after agreements with many financial institutions across markets as diverse as the US, China, Spain, Singapore, Australia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Canada.

Of course, Apple and Google had solid leverage in their mediation of NFC-powered payment solution rollouts, as Android Pay is compatible with so many different mobile products, while iPhone and Apple Watch users can always be counted on for hefty expenses and resulting profits.

Samsung, on the other hand, can’t afford to play hardball after the Note 7 snafu, and although it has Magnetic Secure Transmission tech up its sleeve, the number of supported Galaxy phone models remains small. Bottom line, it might still take a while until UK banks warm up to Samsung Pay.
