iPhone 7 Plus screenshots sent to Pixel getting distorted

You can buy a phone, love it to bits and defend it against the world of opinions against it. But given how our devices are all about communications, you’ll have to deal with other devices by default. And when a connection between two phones goes awry — especially when one of them is an ever-present and ubiquitous iPhone — and there’s no way to hack out of it… well, that’s a problem.

Several Google Pixel and Pixel XL users have reported a problem to the Pixel User Community regarding the reception of iPhone 7 Plus screenshots via MMS. Pat O’Brien complained about seeing weird distortion in pictures of iOS apps, though not in pictures of the home screen.

“I reached out to Google Pixel support and they were no help,” O’Brien posted. “They didn’t know what I meant by a screenshot texted to me – they also went on to tell me Google Drive was not supported in text (what does that have to do with my problem) and they even told me PNG files aren’t supported in Google Photos (again; what?) So they were no help.”

The issue only seems to be affecting screenshots out of the iPhone 7 Plus, not the iPhone 7 and previous iPhones as far as it’s known.

No, the solution is not to tell your iPhone 7 Plus-toting friends to send necessary screenshots (say, plane tickets or dinner plans) through another service — if SMS is what is most convenient for them, you don’t really have a right to convince to migrate off of it just for sending screenshots.

Then again, you shouldn’t have to move off of the SMS app of your choice to fix this issue, especially if it’s the native Google Messenger app, which seems to be where this problem is centered on. The distortion also may be an on-and-off problem, depending on who you’re talking to.

The issue is getting continued attention from Google. We’ll see how far this thread goes down before a fix comes in.
