Just a few short weeks after it began rolling out Nougat goodies domestically, LG managed to convince one of America’s big four carriers, then a second one, to put the pedal to the metal, and keep stock OS alterations to a minimum.
The LG V20 was already the world’s first non-Google-made phone to launch with Android 7.0 pre-installed, and now, the G5 is the first device to run the newest mobile platform iteration on two major US wireless networks.
Well, technically, the LG G5 on both Sprint and T-Mobile remains one step behind 7.1-powered Pixel handhelds, but don’t forget Samsung is still publicly testing the 7.0 waters on the uber-popular Galaxy S7. Meanwhile, the HTC 10 has barely started getting its update in unlocked form, and other high-enders can only hope to follow suit early next year.
Bottom line, LG stands out yet again with solid software support, although Magenta and the “Now Network” deserve a good bit of praise as well. T-Mo’s “new, free” update, rolling out over-the-air now, includes November 1 security patches, weighing in all in all at nearly 1.3GB, which will require a full battery charge and steady Wi-Fi connection.
Available for just $300 with a T-Mobile ONE plan, the LG G5 stands to gain multi-window view, quick switch between apps, Doze on the Go energy efficiency improvements, custom Quick Settings, Data Saver functionality, various security enhancements, and general performance augmentations.
