Nexus 5X warrantied repairs end in total refund from LG

The legacy of the Nexus 5X may end in a full refund for some of its customers and it all could stem from an unfulfilled warranty.

Several Redditors on a thread for the device posted emails from LG Electronics claiming after a duration from when they sent in their Nexus 5X to repair an issue — in the original poster’s case, it was a bootloop problem — that the company cannot warranty the product. No, not because it’s out of warranty, but because it lacks the parts to support the repair.

“We have received your device at our repair facility but currently a part to complete the repair is out of stock and is no longer available,” reads part of the email LG sent to customers.

With parts bins running empty after more than a year’s worth of service duty, LG has decided to offer full refunds to customers based on the invoice they logged at purchase. The chaebol stressed that refunds would take around four weeks to complete with holidays business expected to keep things tied down.

For a few of those affected by this repair-and-refund scheme subscribed to Google’s Project Fi MVNO service, the 5X remains one of the most affordable phones to use it on, no matter where they got it. But one user, who’s now run off of the LG brand, is now stuck in a tough position in order to continue using Project Fi properly.

“[My] choices are either the Nexus 6P or the Pixel,” said ericcwu. “The 6P is too big for my girlfriend to comfortably use and the Pixel costs too much.”
